Antonmaria Salviati (also Anton Maria Salviati or Antonio Maria Salviati ; born January 21, 1537 in Florence , † April 16, 1602 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Origin and early years

He came from the Florentine patrician dynasty of the Salviati and was the son of Lorenzo Salviati (1492–1539) and his wife Costanza Conti . His great-uncle was Pope Leo X , a brother of his grandmother Lucrezia di Lorenzo de 'Medici ; the cardinals Giovanni Salviati and Bernardo Salviati were Antonmaria Salviati's uncles. Following the example of these two, he entered the clergy in 1555.

Little is known about Salvati's educational path. Pierre Hurtubise thinks it is conceivable that he was under the tutelage of his uncle Cardinal Giovanni Salviati after the early death of his father († July 16, 1539 in Ferrara). In 1552, fifteen-year-old Antonio Maria lived with his two years older brother Gian Battista in the Palazzo Della Rovere , his uncle's residence.

There is no evidence of studies, but it is certain that Antonio Maria Salviati returned to Rome between 1563 and 1565, accompanied by a certain Dottore Mazzinghi, where his younger uncle Cardinal Bernardo Salviati became his mentor.

On August 8, 1561, Antonmaria Salviati was elected Bishop of Saint Papoul . He took part in the Council of Trent from 1561 to 1562 . He gave up the leadership of the diocese of Saint Papoul in 1564. This appointed him together with Cardinal Mariano Pierbenedetti to supervise all tribunals of the Roman Curia with the far-reaching authority to present in all pending lawsuits and to pass judgments. Yet in 1592 he was with the Cardinals Alessandro Peretti Damasceni and Mariano Pierbenedetti member of the Prefecture of Rome, the Sacra Consulta and all the cities of the Papal States . On April 24, 1600 he opted for the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina , he was a cardinal proto-priest . On August 30, 1600, he moved to the titular church of Santa Maria in Trastevere .
