Roope Latvala

Are You Dead Yet? is the fifth studio album by the Finnish melodic death metal band Children of Bodom . It was released on September 14, 2005 in Finland and on September 19, 2005 worldwide. The album was recorded between May 2004 and May 2005. It is the first album with Roope Latvala as guitarist after Alexander Kuoppala left in 2003 . A tour was completed for the album (including in Australia , Japan , the United States and Europe ), during which concerts were sometimes sold out.

style

What is striking about the album are the keyboard melodies that are characteristic of the title track "Living Dead Beat". The magazine Whiskey-Soda.de classifies the longplayer in the direction of Death Metal . In addition, stylistic elements of Thrash Metal , Speed Metal and Power Metal can be recognized. The typically aggressive melody of the band is striking. The tempo - with the exception of the song "Punch Me I Bleed" - is kept very high. In its album review, the All Music Guide draws stylistic parallels to the British band Iron Maiden .

Composition & lyrics

Laiho was responsible for the composition of the songs, except for "Bastards Of Bodom", which he composed with Latvala.

Laiho wrote the lyrics as well, except for “Next In Line” and “Bastards Of Bodom”, on which Sinergy's singer and bandmate , Kimberly Goss, was involved. The song "Trashed, Lost & Strungout" comes from the EP of the same name , which topped the 2004 single charts in Finland.

The lyrics are about anger , death and war , among other things . For example, the song "If You Want Peace ... Prepare For War" ( eng. For "if you want peace, prepare for war") the translation of the Latin proverb si vis pacem para bellum .

The band also recorded a cover version of Britney Spears ' Oops! ... I Did It Again , but this only appeared on the Japanese special edition of the album.

reception

The review of the album was positive, even if the critics indicated that there were no major musical changes compared to the previous album. The e-zine laut.de feels the songs on Are Your Dead Yet? as “first class” even if the “big surprises” are not to be found on the album. The alternative magazine Whiskey Soda sees it similarly :

"[...] even if the work has by no means lost any of its aggression and creativity, and even after several iterations continues to bring new subtleties to light, 'Are You Dead Yet?' not the impact of its brilliant predecessor 'Hate Crew Deathroll' [...] "
