(2005)

Hate Crew Deathroll is the fourth studio album by the Finnish metal band Children Of Bodom . The metal genre in which the band's music should be classified is highly controversial, but it is often defined as Melodic Death Metal or Power Metal .

The album was recorded in August and September 2002 at “Astia Studio” in Finland. Anssi Kippo was the producer. Then the recordings were mixed and mastered in Finnvox Studios by Mikko Karmila and Count Jussila. It was released on January 7, 2003 under Spinefarm Records and later under other music labels .

After the album was released, the band went on tour. In February they played six concerts in Japan with Rob Halford as support . In March and April they performed ten times in Finland, some with well-known support bands such as Norther or Finntroll . Then they started their tour through Europe with Soilwork and Shadows Fall . They gave 29 concerts, among others in Germany , England , Spain and Austria .

Hate Crew Deathroll is also the last album on which Alexander Kuoppala takes part as a rhythm guitarist . He left the band in July 2003 for personal reasons. His successor was Roope Latvala from Sinergy , who was originally only supposed to help out in the band for a short time, but is now a full member.

style

As on the previous albums Something Wild , Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper , Children of Bodom's music is characterized by simple metal riffs and the growling vocals of Laiho .

“You have never heard the Finnish combo roar so hard, heavy and violent, the double riffs, cold sequencers and keyboard effects as well as distorted vocals make 'Hate Crew Deathroll' sound brutal and venomous, but of course the beloved trademarks were retained. [...] "

- CD review: Hate Crew Deathroll

On the album you can find the simple hard metal riffs ( Sixpounder ) and also the vocals of Laiho, which was partly overdriven even more ( Needled 24/7 ) and thus seems harder.

But there are also new elements in the music: The keyboard has moved more into the background and often only takes on an accompanying function, as is common with other metal bands, but the usual solo models between the electric guitar and keyboard have been retained. Also new for Children of Bodom are the electric reefs that are used at Needled 24/7 .

The tempo of the songs is - as usual with Children of Bodom - very high. Angels Don't Kill is the only slower tempo song on the album.

The total playing time of the CD was also criticized at Hate Crew Deathroll . As with the previous albums, this is relatively short at around 40 minutes.

The cover was designed by Sami Saramäki. Also on this album it shows the symbol of the band, the Grim Reaper . The artwork is bright red and shows him swinging his scythe to strike.

All melodies and lyrics for the songs were written and composed by Alexi Laiho, except for Chokehold (Cocked 'n' Loaded) , which he and Henkka “T. Blacksmith “Seppälä and Alexander Kuoppala and Lil 'Bloodred Ridin' Hood , which he composed with Alexander Kuoppala.

Between the songs Needled 24/7 and Sixpounder you can hear a passage from the American war film Platoon :

“Death? What do yall know about death? "

"Death? What do you all know about death? "

- platoon

Music videos were shot for these two songs . A music video for Needled 24/7 was also made, but it was only broadcast a few times and never released on DVD because the band members were not satisfied with the result. There are two versions of the video from Sixpounder . The only difference between the two videos is that the license plate number of the car is “COB 6 6” instead of “COB 666” and the blood is darker in color so that it looks fake.

Another film quote can be heard between the songs Bodom Beach Terror and Angels Don't Kill :

"My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better world for anyone, in fact I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape ”

“My pain is constant and intense. And I don't hope for a better world for anyone. I even want my pain to be inflicted on others too. I want nobody to get away with it. "

The tracks You're Better Off Dead and Lil 'Bloodred Ridin' Hood are linked by a drum solo that begins at the end of You're Better Off Dead and merges into Lil 'Bloodred Ridin' Hood .

You're Better Off Dead is also the only single released from the album. The song was released on CD in April 2002 in exactly the same version as on the album along with the Ramones cover Somebody Put Something in My Drink . The drum solo was cut away for the single version.

The single achieved gold status in Finland .

The song Hate Crew Deathroll only lasts 3:36 minutes in the album version, but the original version on the Spinefarm Edition of the CD contains, much quieter, a three-minute recording on which the band members sing drunk in the studio.

Hate crew

The name Hate Crew was invented by the band members. That means the cast, the management and the most loyal fans of the band.

"We're the Hate Crew, we stand and we won't fall, we all for none and none for all… We'll fight 'til the last hit and as sure as hell we're taking no shit!"

"We are the" Hate Crew ", we stand and we will not fall, all for none and none for all ... We will fight to the last blow and - sure as hell - we will not take any shit!"

- Hate Crew Deathroll

The band sells shirts and fan articles with these sentences and the logo "COBHC" ("Children Of Bodom Hate Crew"). The title, Hate Crew Deathroll, is mostly played towards the end of concerts and gigs.
