Hatebreeder is the second studio album by the melodic death metal band Children of Bodom . It was released on April 26, 1999 via Spinefarm Records . Nuclear Blast took over the distribution in Europe and America .

After the release, Children of Bodom went on the “Hatebreeder Japan Tour” with In Flames and Sinergy in July 1999 , which consisted of two concerts in Tokyo and one in Osaka . This was followed by the “Hatebreeder Europe Tour” in September and October, together with Arch Enemy , Dark Tranquility and In Flames.

History of origin

The tracks were recorded between December 1998 and January 1999 together with Anssi Kippo. The songs were written by Alexi Laiho , except for Bed of Razors , which Laiho and Alexander Kuoppala wrote together. The lyrics are also from Laiho, with the exception of the text from Silent Night, Bodom Night , which is from Kimberly Goss.

style

The music on the album is influenced by the fast melodies of Power Metal , Alexi Laiho's guttural vocals are reminiscent of singers from the Death and Melodic Death Metal genre and some melodies even come from classical music .

As on all of the band's albums, the fast, melodic guitar / keyboard duels are an important part of the music. On no other album has the keyboard come to the fore as much as on Hatebreeder .

Furthermore, hard, heavily distorted guitar riffs are used, which alternate with the fast solos.

The pace is kept high, Bed of Razors is the exception. With this song the tempo is a bit more moderate.

Cover

The cover was designed by Graham French, who also created the cover image for Something Wild . It is colored green and shows a grim reaper holding a scythe in his left hand and stretching out his right hand to the side. A lake and trees can be seen in the background. The hand holding the scythe can be seen more closely on the back.

No Commands is also included as a bonus track on the Japanese version of the Hatebreeder album . The single has a total running time of 9:20 and was also produced by Anssi Kippo.

The cover is very similar to that of the album, you can see a lake and trees that are green, but the Grim Reaper is missing here, which is in the foreground on the album.
