The Arklow W-Class is a four-unit class of ships operated by the Irish shipping company Arklow Shipping.

history

The ships are built at the Ferus Smit shipyard in Leer . The construction contract was signed in autumn 2016. The ships, which are based on the previously built coaster type " Ferus Smit 8400 ", replace the ships of the previous W-class , which were sold in 2016 and 2017.

The construction of the ships was partly financed by loans from KfW-IPEX- and DekaBank , which made EUR 51 million available. 95% of the loans are secured by Hermes Cover.

description

The ships are from a four-stroke - eight-cylinder - diesel engine of the manufacturer Caterpillar : (Type MaK with 3,840 8M32C)  kW power driven. The motor acts on a variable pitch propeller with a Kort nozzle via a reduction gear . The ships are equipped with a bow thruster .

A generator driven by the main engine with 750 kW and two diesel generators each with an output of 250 kW are available for power generation. An emergency generator with 100 kW output was also installed.

The ships have two box-shaped holds . Cargo space 1 tapers slightly in the front area. Cargo hold 1 is 42.0 m long, 16.05 m wide and 11.8 m high. The loading space has a capacity of 7,540 m³. Cargo hold 2 is 64.0 m long, 16.05 m wide and 11.8 m high. The capacity is 12,176.7 m³. The holds are closed with pontoon hatch covers that can be moved with the help of a hatch car. The ships are equipped with two bulkheads that can be set up in nine positions in the two holds. The tank top can be loaded with 20 t / m².

The deck superstructures are located in the rear of the ships. 14 single cabins are available for the ship's crew , which are spread over four decks . The engine room , mess and galley as well as the bridge are housed on three other decks . A free-fall lifeboat is located behind the superstructures .

The hull of the ships is reinforced with ice ( ice class 1A).
