Armed Forces of Liberia

The Armed Forces of Liberia (Engl. Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) ) go back to a militia that of the first black colonists of Liberia was founded. It was reorganized in 2008 and is under the command of the President of Liberia. The military commander is Brigadier General Daniel Dee Ziankahn .

history

The Liberian Frontier Force was founded in 1908 and renamed the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) in 1956 . From 1941 to 1989, the AFL training received by US - military advisors , but never reached the level of armies in the West. In 1979 national demonstrations and riots broke out. On April 12, 1980, Samuel K. Doe took power after a military coup . This marked the beginning of a 20-year phase of political instability. Doe was deposed, tortured and killed in 1990. A civil war that lasted 14 years followed . After the ceasefire between the warring parties in 2003 was sealed, President Taylor left the country. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has been the President-elect of Liberia since January 16, 2006 . The New National Defense Act of 2008 reorganized the military, which was disintegrated during the Civil War .

Armed forces

army

The army includes two infantry - battalions and support troops. The nominal strength is 2100 men, they are stationed in the former Camp Schiefflin.

air force

The air force was disbanded in 2005, but had effectively ceased to exist during the civil war.

Coast guard

The Coast Guard , which was reactivated in 2010, received 2 Defender-class boats from the United States in 2011 .
