academic career

After finishing school, Gego studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University . Subsequently, from 1963, he was taken over as technical manager and later as chief engineer at the agricultural machinery factory H. Faehse & Co KG in Düren . On February 9, 1968 , he received his doctorate in engineering. at the RWTH Aachen with the dissertation A contribution to the problem of the controlled mechanical separation of sugar beets . From July 1969 he moved to a managerial position at Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD), where his field of work was agricultural engineering .

In 1974 Gego accepted a call to RWTH Aachen University, where he was director of the Agricultural Engineering Department at the Institute for Motor Vehicles in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering until his retirement in 2002 and held a chair for teaching and motor vehicles and agricultural technology.

In addition, Gego was and is active in various professional associations and institutions and, among other things, initially took over the management of Trac-Technik Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH in Cologne, which was founded by Daimler-Benz and KHD . In 1991 he took over the management of Aix-Consult-Technology Transfer Consulting GmbH, which was dissolved in 2016 after insolvency proceedings .

In addition, Gego is a member of the Max Eyth Society for Agricultural Technology in the Association of German Engineers (VDI), which he headed from 1986 to 1994 as chairman. In addition, he does volunteer work for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as well as in the Club of Bologna , an association of leading global experts in the field of agricultural technology and mechanization.

Finally, in 2006, he created the Academic Student Promotion Award , which is used to reward outstanding bachelor, master and doctoral theses with a horse-related focus with prize money of € 3,000.

Equestrian activities

Gego has been involved in equestrian sport since his earliest childhood and participated in show jumping up to S level. His main interest, however, was in course construction and he therefore volunteered with the renowned course constructors Hans-Heinrich Brinckmann (1911–1991) and Bertalan de Némethy (1911–2002), among others . In 1973 Gego was signed for the first time internationally and was technical delegate at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . Among other things, he designed the obstacle structure for the World Show Jumping Championships in Aachen in 1986 and in 1989 built the course for the final of the FEI World Cup Show Jumping in Tampa / Florida . In his hometown club, the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein (ALRV), he was also responsible for setting up the course for the annual CHIO Aachen for 22 years and was a member of the board there for many years. In Germany, Gego belongs to Olaf Petersen and his son Olaf Jun, Frank Rothenberger, Werner Deeg and Christian Wiegand to the small group of course builders who are allowed to set the course and design at the Olympic Games and Championships - level 4.

In addition, Gego took on orders for the planning and design of entire sports parks and equestrian facilities, for example in Monterrey / Mexico , Istanbul , Luxembourg , Bagnaia , Valkenswaard or in Rjazan south of Moscow . In 2015 Gego celebrated the completion of the Hippo Arena Šamorín in Slovakia , where he was jointly responsible for the planning of a large-scale sports center directly on the Danube . This sports center comprised a total of 90 hectares, of which 38 hectares were for three grass and two sand courts as well as an all-weather racecourse (1,650 m) and 600 fixed horse boxes and two multi-purpose halls for equestrian sports.

With his expertise, Gego is still involved in numerous equestrian bodies, including the course construction advisory board of the German Judges' Association for Horse Performance Testing, the International Course Designers Council and the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI). However, this deleted him from the list of course builders in 2012 after he had not designed enough courses in tournaments approved by the FEI in the previous years according to the local statutes, which was revised in 2016.

In order to offer international course builders a further training opportunity, he founded the Aachen School of Course Design together with Leopoldo Palacios and Olaf Petersen in 2004 and took over its management. In addition, he invited to the First Equestrian Global Forum in Aachen in 2013, during which ideas, visions and proposed solutions were discussed with functionaries and activists and which will subsequently be repeated on a regular basis. In keeping with this, together with Hauke Schmidt, Olaf Petersen and / or his wife Christa Heilbach-Gego, who has also been a successful course builder for many years, he wrote several internationally published publications on the subject of course construction and design.

Gego has received several awards for his numerous services to equestrian sport and, in particular, to course building. In 2008 he received the German Equestrian Cross in Gold from the German Equestrian Association and the Golden Ring from the ALRV.

In 2013 he was also awarded the Swarowski Award from Performance Sales International (PSI) for his life's work .
