Arnold Maury (2012)

Arnold Maury (born August 17, 1927 in Kiel ; † February 5, 2018 there ) was a contemporary German composer and writer .

Life

Arnold Maury was born into a musical family: his mother Martha was a piano teacher, his father Paul was a freelance violinist in Kiel and his grandfather was already a musician. Maury learned to play the piano at an early age and his first attempts at composition were made at this time. His training at the Max Planck School in Kiel was interrupted by military service and subsequent Soviet imprisonment. In 1949 he was able to catch up on his Abitur and between 1950 and 1951 studied musicology at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . At the same time he received private composition lessons from Willi Kröger (1903–1968) and was instructed in harmony by Martin Usbeck. His parents' concerns led him to study school music for two semesters in Hamburg. On the advice of lecturers and fellow students, however, he finally changed his subject and completed a full-blown composition course from 1953 to 1959 with the renowned teachers Philipp Jarnach and Ernst Gernot Klußmann at the Hamburg University of Music .

In the 1950s, Arnold Maury was a successful jazz pianist: together with Stefan von Dobrzynski (alto saxophone, clarinet, flute), Jobst Erdmann (bass) and Ingo Thiede (drums), he made a significant contribution to building up a jazz scene in Kiel. The combo played among others in Club California , which was located in Klahn's Hotel , in Magdeburg and in Riverside , all institutions in Kiel. In 1955 the musicians parted ways: Arnold Maury devoted himself more and more to composing and around Stefan von Dobrzynski his well-known quartet was formed. The activities as a jazz pianist not only helped Maury to finance his studies, but also provided some impulses for his own compositional work. Examples include The Color out of Space for a large jazz ensemble from 1976 or the Grenzgang cycle , which premiered on April 29, 1981 in the Buxtehudesaal of the Lübeck University of Music , combines conventional instruments with the sound of electric piano and synthesizer.

After graduating, Maury became a musical editor for the North German Radio . In 1968 he married Roselies Ewert, who - besides her job - took over the management of the composer. In order to be able to devote himself more intensively to his own work, Maury gave up his editing activity, gave music lessons at the Ellen Cleve School in Kiel from 1972 and held a teaching position for music theory and aural training at the Lübeck University of Music between 1978 and 1984.

In the autumn of 1982 Maury founded the group of Kiel composers together with Wilhelm Kaiser-Lindemann and Martin Karl-Wagner , which distinguished itself in the following years through numerous concerts with their own and other works. Roselies Maury took over the organization of these concerts. In addition, he designed and initiated the Contrapunkte concert series in Kiel , which dealt exclusively with new music. In this way, Mauricio Kagel , György Ligeti , Peter Michael Hamel and Isang Yun were invited to the capital of Schleswig-Holstein in the 1980s and 1990s . And in this context, Maury's 2nd Chamber Symphony was launched by the NDR Symphony Orchestra .

Many well-known interpreters have (first) performed works by Maury, including Kammersänger Hans Georg Ahrens ( 3 North Sea songs , 3 songs from difficult times ), the opera and concert singer Thomas Mohr (from the tower the daffodils rang ...) , the singer Elisabeth Graf the Rheinisches Bach Collegium (And Kabir says ...) , the pianist Peter Roggenkamp (1st and 3rd piano sonatas), the pianist Vera-Carina Stellmacher (2nd and 4th piano sonatas, shouting from afar ), the Brandis Quartet (3rd . String quartet) , the Kiel Philharmonic (3rd symphony) and the ensemble the new work of the NDR symphony orchestra (2nd chamber symphony).

The composer's estate is kept in the Schleswig-Holstein State Library , Kiel.

Composition technique

Since the 1970s, Arnold Maury followed the principle of composition with "tonal rows". The composer explains: Formally, his works are “determined by the unifying reference system of the 'tonal series'. Melody and chord rows are drawn from a brief, profiled topic with functional echoes. The melody line, permuted several times by exchanging tones, provides unanimous rows. The combination of these lines, vertical chords created by narrowing them, the polyphonic composition of the theme and its functional harmonization result in series of chords. The rhythm of the topic is also used. The topic appears - usually towards the end - as a climax. Before that it builds up - then it ends. "

Works

Arnold Maury's extensive oeuvre encompasses almost all musical genres: In addition to five symphonies, eight string quartets and six piano sonatas, there are also some unusual chamber music ensembles, vocal symphonic works, song cycles and, last but not least, literary works. His main work, however, is the musical chronicle Lamentation of Jeremiah, based on texts from the Old Testament, which is dedicated to the memory of Regina Nagelberg and her two daughters - a Jewish family who lived in the same house in Kiel during the composer's childhood and adolescence was deported and murdered by the National Socialists .
