Life

Arthur Honegger was officially taken away as an illegitimate child because of the minor mother and given to a foster family in the Zurich Oberland . At the age of 14 he came to a home, later as a contract child with a farmer and finally to the Uitikon labor education center near Zurich . After his release, he made his way through various professions: farmhand, riding boy, miner, milker, worker in the machine industry, workshop clerk.

In 1960 he became secretary of the Social Democratic Party of the canton of Thurgau and editor of the Thurgauer Arbeiterzeitung . His breakthrough as a journalist came as an editor at the tabloid Blick from 1962 to 1969, where he worked as a reporter for the Middle East during the Six Day War and during the Auschwitz trial in Frankfurt . In 1970 he moved to Diners Club Magazin as editor-in-chief .

In 1974 his first book, The Ready Makers , appeared about his childhood and youth. From 1991 to 1996 he was a member of the St. Gallen Cantonal Council . Honegger had been married since 1949, had three children and lived in Krummenau in Toggenburg .

Honegger wrote mostly autobiographical texts from areas that he knew from within: contract children, poverty, local politics, the working class. The novel When they come tomorrow was filmed in 1981 for GDR television with the title The Uninvited Guest , directed by Peter Wekwerth . In 2004 the film Turi by Lotty Wohlwend and Renato Müller was released, based on the novel The Ready Makers and Honegger's Life After Education.

He died on August 15, 2017 at the age of 92 in Nesslau.
