Arthur Freiherr von Hübl (born March 20, 1853 in Großwardein (today: Oradea, Romania ), † April 7, 1932 in Vienna ), Dr. hc, was an Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal , chemist and cartographer who was instrumental in the modernization of cartography .

Arthur von Hübl was the son of the middle-class officer Franz Hübl (* June 24, 1814 , † August 23, 1884 ). This was on June 20 in 1854 as imperial captain of the 5th Field Artillery - Regiment in Vienna by the award of the Order of the Iron Crown III. Class raised to the hereditary Austrian knighthood . As an imperial and royal field marshal lieutenant , Franz von Hübl was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown, 2nd class, on November 5, 1875, and was raised to the hereditary status of Austrian barons due to the statutes of the order .

Life

Arthur von Hübl studied chemistry as a lieutenant in the artillery from 1879–81 at the Technical University in Vienna. He devoted himself particularly to technical and analytical as well as photochemistry . In 1885 he was transferred from the Artillery Equipment Institute to the Military Geographic Institute . In the course of his work he played a decisive role in the modernization of the card system. In 1913 he retired as a field marshal lieutenant and an honorary doctorate from the Vienna University of Technology.

In the First World War in the Army reactivated, he directed the Military Geographical Institute as its commander from 1916-18. He introduced offset printing , promoted stereo photogrammetry and improved the electroforming process .

With its innovations and methods, Hübl gained international recognition. 1920–24 he set up a cartographic institute in Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil ) based on the Viennese model . After his retirement he continued his work in a laboratory at the Cartographic Institute Vienna, the former Military Geographic Institute.

Hübl was a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . The City of Vienna gave him an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (12D-1-11). The Hübl Peak in Antarctica bears his name.
