Asso (alternative title: Asso - A heavenly player ; also: Asso - The ace always stings ) is an Italian comedy from 1981 with Adriano Celentano .

action

The film is about "Asso", a brilliant and eccentric Italian poker pro . At the beginning of the film he marries the beautiful Silvia. He promises her that he will no longer gamble and take a solid office job in the town hall. Ironically on the day of his wedding, the “man from Marseille”, a notorious poker player, comes to town. Silvia allows Asso to play again. Thanks to his experience, Asso can actually beat him and pocket a well-filled pot of several million lire. But on the way home he is shot by a professional killer who shoots him with a heavy heart on behalf of an unknown enemy.

Asso is dead, but Heaven gives him a limited time on earth. He is allowed to stay on earth as a spirit until his wife has found a new husband. Invisible to his environment, only Silvia perceives him, who initially refuses to acknowledge his death. When the first shock is digested and she thinks Asso by her side, Silvia blossoms again to devote herself to a new life. Asso, meanwhile, understands his mission, why he is still on earth: on the one hand to enable Silvia a carefree life at the side of a new man and on the other hand to convict the person who commissioned his murder.

Asso recognizes the advantages of his ghost existence: He is invisible to other people, but can move objects, act on people and walk through walls.

After exploring the first candidates and ruining Silvia's chances of returning to professional life as a showgirl (according to Asso's wishes, she should have a rich husband and no longer have to work), Asso's choice finally falls on Luigi Morgan, his banker. Although he is widowed, small, skinny and bespectacled, thanks to Asso's influence he can considerably increase his chances. For example, he manages to outdo his former friend Bretella, a sleazy bar owner, as a rival. Morgan proposes to Silvia, which she accepts somewhat reluctantly.

Bretella, who is madly in love with Silvia, visits the killer to have the banker killed. It turns out that it was he who gave Asso the murder order out of frenzied jealousy. The killer refuses and tells him that after his illness has subsided, he will go to the police to confess to Asso's murder. Bretella then kills the killer. The killer goes to hell and is given clearance to speak to Asso. He tells him about Bretella.

At the same time, Bretella kidnaps the groom in his car and kidnaps him to extort a ransom. Morgan can, however, notify the police via his car phone, but only the Asso who is present notices, who in turn is concerned about Morgan's whereabouts. Ultimately, Asso kidnaps the chief inspector in his company car and sets off with a parade of motorcycle police officers in pursuit. In the end, the car can be stopped, Bretella arrested, and Morgan taken to his wedding. But this does not take place because Morgan has been shaken by the recent events in his dreary life and still loves his late wife. He made a vow that if he survived the kidnapping, he would never marry again.

The resigned Asso already believes in the failure of his mission, when he and Silvia hear about a new poker pro who is said to be even better than Asso. This ultimately turns out to be a stuttering image of Asso, with whom Silvia immediately falls in love. Asso is against a gamer as a husband because of his own experience, but eventually disappears because he has fulfilled his "mission".

Once in heaven, Asso realizes that God is just as gifted a poker player as he is - and receives a defeat. Since both of them have eternity, they agree on a rematch in 3000 years after the Tagesschau .

Trivia

  • Nine years later, the plot was taken up again in a variation for the American film industry: The fantasy comedy Ghost - Message from Sam with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore shows isolated parallels to the film.
  • To impress Morgan, Asso turns on the ventilation in his office behind Silvia, who swirls up her dress provocatively. The scene shows parallels to the famous Marilyn Monroe dress scene in the movie The Itchy 7th Year . (see also Monroe Effect )
  • Celentano plays three roles in the film: once as Asso, then as a nameless new poker pro and finally as God himself, who defeats Asso in the game. During the final credits, some still images of Celentano in God Masquerade are faded in.

Reviews

  • “The not exactly new basic idea of comedy is overburdened and only loosened up by a few successful gags; wooden and clumsy staged. "( Lexicon of international film )
