Ataco is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Tolima in Colombia .

geography

Ataco is located in the south of Tolima in the province of Sur at an altitude of 900 m above sea level. NN on the Río Saldaña about 135 km from Ibagué . The municipality borders in the north on Chaparral , in the northeast on Coyaima , in the east on Natagaima , in the southeast on Aipe in the Departamento del Huila , in the southwest on Planadas and in the west on Rioblanco .

The municipality of Ataco has 22,818 inhabitants, 5479 of whom live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

When the Spaniards arrived, the indigenous peoples of the Atacaimas and Cupilicuás lived in the area of today's municipality . Today's Ataco probably goes back to a foundation that Alfonso Fuenmayor carried out in 1778.
