Mariquita , full name San Sebastian de Mariquita is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Tolima in Colombia .

Mariquita is located in the Provincia del Norte in Tolima, 120 km from Ibagué and has an average annual temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality is bordered to the north by Marquetalia and Victoria in the Departamento de Caldas , to the south by Armero and Falan , to the east by Honda and to the west by Fresno .

history

Mariquita was founded in 1551 by the conquistador Francisco Núñez Pedroso for the Spaniards due to the wealth of salt , gold and silver in the region.

economy

The main industry in Mariquita is agriculture . In particular, sugar cane and avocados as well as mangosteen are grown. Animal husbandry and trade also play an important role, and companies in the beverage industry such as Postobón operate filling plants.
