Flandes is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Tolima in Colombia . Flandes borders Girardot directly to the south only separated by the Río Magdalena and belongs to the Girardot metropolitan region .

Flandes is located in the east of Tolima , in the province of Ibagué at an altitude of 285 m above sea level. NN on the Río Magdalena about 72 km from Ibagué and has an average annual temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on Girardot and Ricaurte in the Departamento de Cundinamarca , in the east on Suárez , in the south on El Espinal and in the west on Coello and El Espinal.

history

Flandes emerged in the course of the slow growth of Girardot as a transit point on the southern side of the Río Magdalena . It was first mentioned and officially founded in 1912. In Flandes, Colombia's first air force school was established in 1920. During the construction of the railway line from Bogotá to Neiva , the first iron bridge was built over the Río Magdalena in 1930. The first road bridge ( Puente Ospina Pérez ) was inaugurated in 1950. Flandes has had parish status since 1954.
