Natagaima is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Tolima in Colombia .

geography

Natagaima is located in the south of Tolima in the province of Sur at an altitude of 326  m above sea level. NN on the Río Magdalena about 91 km from Ibagué and has an average annual temperature of 29 ° C. The municipality borders in the northwest on Coyaima , in the northeast on Prado , in the east on Dolores , in the south on Villavieja and Aipe in the Departamento del Huila and in the west on Ataco .

The municipality of Natagaima has 22,320 inhabitants, of which 15,158 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Natagaima was founded by Juan de Borja in 1608 after the battle of the Spaniards against the Pijaos as a settlement for the allied indigenous peoples of the Natagaimas and Coyaimas . Since the settlement could not survive due to landslides, it was moved to its present location in 1801. From 1863 to 1866, Natagaima was the capital of Tolima . It has also had parish status since 1863 .

economy

The main industries in Natagaima are agriculture and animal husbandry . In particular, cotton , rice and bananas are grown and cattle and pigs are kept. There is also pond management .
