Coyaima is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Tolima in Colombia .

geography

Coyaima is located in the south of Tolima , in the province of Sur at an altitude of 392 m above sea level. NN on the Río Saldaña about 114 km from Ibagué and has an average annual temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality is bordered by Saldaña to the north, Purificación and Prado to the east, Natagaima and Ataco to the south and Chaparral and Ortega to the west .

history

The community of Coyaima goes back to the indigenous people of the Coyaimas , who allied themselves with the Spaniards against the Pijaos during the conquest . The Spaniards and Juan de Borja founded a village to concentrate the indigenous peoples in 1608, the existence of which was formalized in 1621. Coyaima has been in its current location since 1778. Coyaima has had parish status since 1863.
