El Espinal is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Tolima in Colombia .

geography

El Espinal is located in the province of Ibagué in Tolima , 48 km from Ibagué , at an altitude of 323  m above sea level. NN and has an average annual temperature of about 29 ° C. The Río Magdalena forms the eastern border and the Río Coello partially the northern border of the municipality. The municipality borders on Coello and Flandes to the north, Suárez to the east, Guamo to the south and San Luis to the west .

history

El Espinal was founded in 1754, initially as Hacienda Llano Grande . Four years later, a small settlement was founded under the name Upito on the Río Coello, which in 1776 became the seat of Llano Grande del Espinal . With the construction of a church in 1781, El Espinal became a parish where it is today. After Colombia's independence, El Espinal became an important junction on the route of the railway from Bogotá to Neiva and Ibagué.
