history

With the arrival of the Spaniards, the area of today's municipality was contested between the indigenous people of the Pijaos and the Panches . Rovira was founded in 1570 on the ruins of a previously destroyed settlement known as Hervidero as Nuestra Señora de la Luz de Miraflores in an effort by the Spanish to dominate the territory. As a result, the Spaniards fended off constant attacks by indigenous peoples on the settlement. Miraflores became a district in 1853 and a parish in 1887 . In the course of the Civil War of the Thousand Days , displaced settlers from other regions of Colombia came to Miraflores. In addition, Syrian and Lebanese immigrants came from 1915. In 1929 the Colombian government asked for the municipality to be renamed so as not to confuse it with Miraflores in Boyacá . The municipality was renamed from Miraflores to Rovira after the independence fighter Custodio García Rovira.
