Honda is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Tolima , Colombia .
origin of the name
The name Honda comes from the Ondaimas , an indigenous people who inhabited the banks and surroundings of the Magdalena River , the largest river in Colombia, where the city is now.
Honda is known as the “City of Bridges” because of the more than 25 bridges over the Magdalena , Gualí , Guarinó and the Quebrada Seca rivers . It is also called the "City of Peace" because it was largely spared from the violence of the 1950s.

Honda is located in the Provincia del Norte in the northeast of Tolima at an altitude of 225 m above sea level. NN , 92 km from Ibagué and 142 km from Bogotá and has an average temperature of 30 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on Victoria and La Dorada in the Departamento de Caldas , in the east on Guaduas in the Departamento de Cundinamarca , in the south on Armero and in the west on Mariquita .

history
Honda was founded on August 24, 1539. The city's “golden age” was between 1850 and 1910, when the Magdalena River was the only inland transport route between the Caribbean coast and Bogotá . The city was the most important river port in the country and all imported goods came to Bogotá through it.

Together with Líbano , Honda is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Líbano-Honda .
