Athensleben is a district of Staßfurt in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt .

Geographical location

Athensleben is located around 6 km (as the crow flies ) northwest of Staßfurt at the mouth of the small Röthe stream (also known as Löderburger Bruchgraben ) in the Bode, which runs there in a north-north-west-south-south-east direction . To the south of the village between the villages of Unseburg in the north-north-west and Löderburg in the south-south-east lies the 36-hectare Löderburger See with other former opencast mining lakes to the north-west of it.

history

Athensleben was first mentioned in 1174 under the name Atteneslove . In 1195 it was mentioned among the Athenians in a document from the monastery of Our Lady . At that time it belonged to the Hillersleben monastery . In the centuries that followed, the life of Athens often served as a pledge and therefore changed hands several times. On December 2, 1734, the Bennecke family became tenants of Athensleben and managed it until after the land reform in 1948. In 1957, lignite mining was wanted to revive and a rail link was therefore built between Athensleben and Groß Börnecke . Furthermore, the Bode was moved to a new bed. In 1961, however, the plan was dropped. In 1991 the small detention center in the field corridor outside the town was closed. In April 1994, when the ground flooded, several depressions were flooded, creating a number of new lakes, such as the approximately 18-hectare Athensleben lake .

On September 30, 1928, the Athensleben manor was converted into a rural parish. On July 1, 1950, the municipality of Athensleben was incorporated into the municipality of Löderburg. Since March 1, 2003, the district has belonged to the city of Staßfurt together with Löderburg. Athensleben has its own local council and a local mayor , who represent the interests of the district within the city of Staßfurt.
