August John Paul Bohnhorst (born July 18, 1849 in Hamburg , † April 14, 1919 in Scheveningen , The Hague ) was a German naval and landscape painter and draftsman.

Life

August Bohnhorst's studio addresses in Hamburg changed frequently, in 1876 and 1877 it was Fuhlentwiete 70a, in 1877 and 1878 Hafenstrasse 41, in 1879 and 1880 Paulstrasse 29, in 1881 and 1882 Hermannstrasse 29 and from 1883 to 1886 it was Eilbeckerweg 52. Bohnhorst left after trips to South America and Belgium , among others , settled in Scheveningen in the Netherlands , then a fishing village, now a district of The Hague , where he lived until 1887 or 1888. He then moved to The Hague and lived at Wilhelminastraat 50 in the Bezuidenhout district in the Haagse Hout district . From 1893 he lived again in Scheveningen in the Belgisch Park district . He preferred open air painting and often worked with Jozef Israëls , the founder of the Hague School in The Hague and the surrounding area. Bohnhorst's pictures, most of which he signed with A. Bohnhorst , are very much in the style of the Hague School .

Bohnhorst was a member of the Hamburger Künstlerverein from 1832 and until 1886 of the Kunstverein in Hamburg . For the annual, public association raffle on December 20, 1886, the art association bought an oil painting by Bohnhorst, which was entitled September morning. For the club raffle on December 16, 1889, the Kunstverein bought the watercolors Fischerhütte in den Dünen and Morgen am Canal near Veerschooten, as well as the charcoal drawings Bei Veerschooten , Beach of Scheveningen , Evening near Wittebrüg , Evening in Scheveningen and Canal von Scheveningen . For the December raffle in 1893 the association acquired the oil painting Summer Evening near Voorburg and for an exhibition lottery of the association in 1894 the oil painting Dutch interior .
