August Hauptmann

August Hauptmann (born March 22, 1607 in Dresden ; † December 21, 1674 ibid) was a German doctor , alchemist and balneologist in Dresden and Warmbad near Wolkenstein .

Life

August Hauptmann grew up as the son of the ship merchant Balthasar Hauptmann in New Dresden. His mother Katharina was the daughter of the mayor and electoral valet Bastian Kröß (1524–1602). After attending the city school in Dresden Neustadt, he was enrolled at the University of Wittenberg in 1619 (at the age of 12) . 1637 he was back in Wittenberg and 1641 he enrolled in Leipzig , a in the years to study the field of medicine to take.

In 1646 he went to Hornhausen near Oschersleben to examine two “miracle springs”. In 1653 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on bile and then practiced in Dresden. In addition, in 1656, together with the tax collector Heinrich Schrey, he took over the run-down Bad Wolkenstein in the Ore Mountains . The Electress Magdalena Sibylla stayed in the bath every year and had the water brought to Dresden.

Around 1642 Hauptmann intervened significantly in the dispute between his friend Johann Agricola and the Stettin pharmacist Georg Detharding , which both sides included in several tracts and only ended with Detharding's death.

In 1660, Hauptmann was commissioned by Elector Johann Georg II to carry out an alchemical process described by Bergrat Amadeus Friedlieb. Between 1659 and 1665, he was director of the Secret Chemistry Laboratory in the Dresden Goldhaus.
