Prince August Ludwig zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (born March 6, 1788 in Berleburg , † January 6, 1874 in Berleburg) was a Nassau general , politician and minister of state . In 1849 he was Prime Minister of the Provisional Central Authority .

August Ludwig was born in 1788 as the son of Prince Christian Heinrich von Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Charlotte Friederike Franziska von Leiningen-Westerburg-Grünstadt. In 1823 he married Franziska Maria Fortunata Allesina gen. Von Schweitzer (1802–1878), the granddaughter of the wealthy Frankfurt merchant Franz Maria Schweitzer . The marriage resulted in 6 children: Emil Karl Adolf (1824), Anna Albertine Georgine (1827), Ferdinand Wilhelm Emil (1834), Philipp Karl Emil Georg (1836), Otto Emil Karl (1842) and Franz Emil Luitpold (1842) . Military career

August Ludwig Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg initially embarked on a military career and in 1803 became Premier Lieutenant in the Grand Duchy of Hesse . He took part in the Napoleonic Wars . In 1814 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and in 1835 to major general. He was the commander of the “ Chevauxlegers ” guards regiment .

In 1840 he became lieutenant general and adjutant general and in 1842 he was appointed division commander. In 1848 he retired from military service. In 1852 he was Nassauischer lieutenant general of the Duke of Nassau Army and Adjutant.

Political work

In the years 1835–1844 August Ludwig Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg served as the Hessian envoy in Prussia .

After the March Revolution he was from May 21 to December 20, 1849 in the Reich government of Reichsverweser Johann von Österreich Reich Minister of War and from June 3 to December 20, 1849 Prime Minister.

From February 7, 1852 to the end of the Duchy of Nassau on June 30, 1866 he was Minister of State of the Duchy. His pro-Austria attitude led to participation in the German War on Austria's side in 1866 . This ended with the annexation of Nassau by Prussia , which also ended the political career of August Ludwig Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.

Honors

In 1858, Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg was awarded the Nassau House Order of the Golden Lion by Duke Adolph for his services .
