Friedrich Gerhard Levin Freiherr von Wintzingerode (born August 25, 1799 in Hanau , † September 28, 1870 in Bonn ) was a German administrative lawyer and member of the Duchy of Nassau , which was annexed to the Kingdom of Prussia after the German War .

origin

His family came from Eichsfeld, now in Thuringia . He was the second eldest son of the Hesse-Kassel chamber councilor Levin von Wintzingerode (1768-1813) and Amalie Luise von Motz (1776-1840). His brothers were the later major general Adolph von Wintzingerode (1801–1874), the district president Freiherr Heinrich Philipp Rudolph Levin von Wintzingerode (1806–1864) and Philipp von Wintzingerode (1812–1871). His father was a landlord in Oberurff in what is now the Schwalm-Eder district .

Life

From 1843 to 1847 Friedrich von Wintzingerode was the representative of Johann Moritz (Nassau-Siegen) in the first chamber of the estates of the Duchy of Nassau . As envoy , he represented the Duchy of Nassau and the Duchy of Braunschweig at the Bundestag (German Confederation) in Frankfurt am Main . From 1849 to 1851 he was Prime Minister of Nassau . As a rather liberal representative of monarchical conservatism, Wintzingerode came into conflict with Duke Adolph (Luxembourg) , who wanted to take back all democratic achievements of the March Revolution , at the beginning of the reaction era. At the end of 1851, Wintzingerode finally resigned. His successor was the reactionary Prince August Ludwig zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg . Wintzingerode initially remained politically active in Nassau and was, among other things, an elected member of the state estates and Lord Chamberlain of the Duke. In 1866 he became President of the Prussian government in the Potsdam region . He was also Grand Cross of the Order of Adolph von Nassau and Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John .

marriage

On September 22, 1827 he married Luise Caroline Marschall von Bieberstein (1804-1884). As a member of the Marburg fraternity , he joined the original fraternity in Jena in 1818/19 .
