Book 1: water

From January 2002 Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko began to design the series. At the beginning of 2003, Nickelodeon gave them the starting signal for the production of a series pilot . The pilot was animated at Tin House, Inc. in South Korea and completed in February 2004. The pilot was published for the first time on the US DVD set of book one, but only with an audio commentary that could not be removed. Almost four years later, the pilot appeared in the iTunes Store without audio commentary . A television broadcast never took place.

The pilot is not part of the series, but contains many ideas that were realized differently or changed later in the series. For example: Katara was still called Kya here; the children meet the sea serpent on the way; a statue of a lion turtle and the male prototype of Toph can be seen in the intro. In addition, Mitchel Musso can be heard as Aang, who was replaced by Zach Tyler Eisen for the series . The rest of the cast was retained for the series.

Then come sun warriors who show the two of them the way to their masters Ran and Shaw in the mountains. There each of them should present a part of the Eternal Flame. Now with a new goal (to restore balance), he is able to use and teach the power of fire.

At the outer wall of Ba Sing Se you come across the Order of the White Lotus, which includes Master Pakku, Jeong Jeong, King Bumi - who single-handedly recaptured Omashu -, Master Piandao and Iroh. Zuko talks to Iroh, who tells him that Zuko must become a fire lord and that he must defeat Azula; with Katara's support. Sokka, Suki and Toph make their way to the Fire Nation's airship fleet, which is located near the Earth Kingdom coast. Iroh goes with the Order to take back Ba Sing Se from the Fire Nation. Meanwhile, Aang is talking to his previous reincarnations on the mysterious island. He interprets her words to mean that there is no way out but the death of Ozai. After that, he finds out that this moving island is a giant lion turtle. Aang asks the lion turtle for advice. This advises him and touches him on two parts of the body, which causes them to light up. Aang sits on the shore of the Earth Kingdom and waits for Ozai while the comet appears in the sky.

Toph tames the rudder of an airship, causing the airships to fly into each other. She and Sokka are cornered by firebenders when another airship appears with Suki at the helm. The order reaches the center of Ba Sing Se and liberates it. Ozai forces Aang out of the stone ball with his shock wave. A rock is pressed onto Aang's wound, which means that his chakra is no longer blocked. He appears instantly in the avatar state. Katara now fights against Azula and manages to tie her up. Then she heals Zuko. Ozai is hopelessly outnumbered in the fight against the Avatar. But shortly before Aang kills him, he lets up in his anger and touches him in the same places where he was touched by the lion turtle. He tames the energy in Ozai and thus robs him of the ability to tame. Aang then extinguishes the fire in the country. The comet pulls away and the war is over.

Zuko meets Mai and they become a couple again. All friends from all over the world come to the big ceremony in which Zuko is crowned the new Fire Lord. Ty Lee is also present and is now part of the Kyoshi warriors. Zuko proclaims that he is beginning a new age of love and peace with the help of the Avatar, and is crowned. Afterwards, Zuko visits his father in prison and asks where his mother is. Finally, all friends are gathered in the Iroh tea shop in Ba Sing Se. In front of the shop, Aang is playing with Momo when Katara joins him and they kiss.

Short films

Three super deformed short films were produced for the series and were included on the bonus disc of the DVD box set for Book Two in the United States. Only School Time Shipping was published months earlier as part of the online campaign for the game or animated comic Escape from the Spirit World on Nick.com, and was discovered a week earlier than planned. The short films were released in German on November 12, 2009 on discs two, three and four of the DVD box set of book three, and subsequently also on the individual volumes that were subsequently released. However, no German titles are given in the menu.
