With effect from January 1, 2017, the previously independent municipalities of Aviernoz , Évires , Les Ollières , Saint-Martin-Bellevue and Thorens-Glières were merged into a Commune nouvelle with the name Fillière and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Thorens-Glières.

geography

Aviernoz is located at 760  m , near Thorens-Glières , about 11 km northeast of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in a basin and saddle between the Fillière and Crenant valley systems, on the edge of the Alps at the northwestern foot of the Tête du Parmelan massif, in the Genevois .

The area extends along the Fillière , which emerges from a basin of the Bornes Alps and flows through an open valley to the west. From the course of the river, the area stretches south across the Aviernoz saddle and the Les Ollières plateau to the Crenant valley . The entire south-eastern part of the area is taken up by the mountain complex of the Tête du Parmelan . The densely forested, steep mountain slopes are dominated by striking limestone walls , including the Tête de Bunant ( 1660  m ) and the Plan de l'Aigle ( 1676  m ). On the high plateau of the Tête du Parmelan there is an impassable cart field that is one of the largest of its kind in the entire Alpine arc.

There are also various hamlet settlements and farms in the area, including:

  • Le Vuaz ( 630  m ) in the Fillière valley opposite Thorens-Glières
  • Possy ( 670  m ) on the southern slope of the Fillière
  • Les Côtes ( 700  m ) on the northern slope of the Crenant

Neighboring towns of Aviernoz are Thorens-Glières in the north, Dingy-Saint-Clair and Villaz in the south and Les Ollières in the west.

history

The village is mentioned in the Middle Ages under the name Aviernnaz . The names Vernod and Vernoud have been handed down from a later period . The place name possibly goes back to the old French word verne (black alder). There was a major change in the area in 1869, when the hamlet of Le Jourdil was separated from Aviernoz with the south-western side of the Filière basin and assigned to Thorens-Glières.

Attractions

In 1896 the village church of Aviernoz was built. The former Château des Côtes now serves as a stately farmhouse.

In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 626 inhabitants in Aviernoz). Since the mid-1970s, however, a significant increase in population has been recorded.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Aviernoz was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are various local small businesses. Otherwise the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the Annecy area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Annecy-le-Vieux to Thorens-Glières. Another road connection is with Les Ollières. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 13 km away.
