Awake is an American television series about the police officer Michael Britten, who lives in two realities after a car accident. In the United States, the series aired on NBC in 2012 . In Germany, the series was released in 2014 in the original language with German subtitles on ProSieben Maxx . A German dubbed version was released on Netflix in 2017.

action

Michael Britten, a police officer, lives in two separate realities after waking up after a serious car accident with his wife and son. In one reality, in which he wears a red bracelet, his wife Hannah survived the accident, in the other, in which he wears a green bracelet, she died while his son Rex survived. He always changes reality when he falls asleep or loses consciousness. For the viewer, both realities are kept completely in the respective color. At first he has great problems finding his way around it, but over time he gets used to the change and continues to live separately with the two family members. In both worlds, he also visits two different therapists who each want to convince him of the authenticity of their reality and see the corresponding other world as a dream with which Britten wants to process the death of the respective family member. Michael also has something to do with Doctor Lee from the "red" reality outside of the sessions. B. comes to a hostage-taking in a hospital.

In the “red” reality, in which his son is no longer alive, Michael and Hannah want to have a second child as a replacement for their son - a project with which Michael initially has problems, since he is in the other reality with his Son lives together. When it turns out that Rex's friend Emma had been impregnated by him before his death, Hannah in particular tries to get involved in order to be involved in the growing up of the child - her grandchild. This is also the reason why the move out of the city, which had been planned for some time, was rejected.

Michael is a detective and has the same manager, Trishia Harper, but different partners in both worlds. In the “red” reality this is Elfrem Vega, in the other Isaiah “Bird” Freeman. Usually the cases in which Michael investigates in both worlds in parallel have to do with each other or he can use the knowledge gained from one to solve the case in the other. This also helps him when his son was kidnapped once and the kidnapper was shot in a meeting that went wrong. Such tips - apparently premonitions or tips from anonymous sources - often lead to suspicion among his investigating partners.

While Michael cannot remember the details of the accident at first, his memory gradually returns. It turns out during the course of the season that the car accident was actually a planned assassination attempt on Michael so that he could not get in the way of a heroin smuggling. Involved in this are Ed Hawkins, Bird's current investigation partner in the "red" reality or former investigation partner in the "green", as well as Britten's superiors Harper and Carl Kessel, Bird's current (red) and former (green) superiors. In the last three episodes the situation comes to a head as Michael learns more and more about the background of the accident and it is therefore to be eliminated. Ultimately, Harper shoots Kessel in the green reality and makes it look like suicide in order not to let any trace of him lead to her, Hawkins is killed there by Michael. This is made possible by clues from the red world, which suddenly becomes very surreal and disappears when Michael discovers the plot in the green world.

The resolution of the background remains open at the end of the 1st season (and thus finally). During a final session with the therapist Doctor Evans, time suddenly seems to stand still around him. A door opens through which he comes into his bedroom and moments later wakes up in his bed in the actual, "uncolored" reality. When he comes into the kitchen, he initially finds neither his son nor his wife there, but then they both come in together. The viewer ultimately remains in the dark about the crucial question of what can be defined as a dream and what as reality. The direction of the viewer based on the color-coded bracelets until they are finally missing and the episode name "One World" in addition to the constantly maintained balance game between the question of whether Michael gives up one of his worlds (which he has always successfully opposed) rather suggest that He, in order not to have to realize the death of his wife and son in the accident, as the last possibility of the psyche to bring both dreams together into "One World" rather than one dream.
