Bahía Honda (German: "deep bay") is a city and a municipality in the province of Artemisa . Until December 31, 2010 Bahía Honda belonged to the province of Pinar del Río . 43,483 people live in the municipality in an area of around 784 square kilometers, which corresponds to a population density of 55.4 inhabitants per square kilometer.

It was named after the bay on which it is located. In the north the municipality is bounded by the Gulf of Mexico , in the east by the Municipio Mariel ( Artemisa province ), in the west by La Palma and in the south by the Municipios Candelaria and San Cristóbal .

Indigenous hunters, gatherers and fishermen originally settled in the region until the Spaniards came. In 1509 the bay was named Bahía Honda by the explorer Sebastián de Ocampo .

In 1903 the city and the bay were leased to the USA , which set up a naval base here. Unlike the second US lease, Guantanamo Bay , it was returned to Cuba in 1912.
