La Palma is a Cuban city ​​and municipality in the province of Pinar del Río . It borders in the north on the Florida Strait in the Gulf of Mexico and in the south on the Municipios Consolación del Sur and Los Palacios . 34,920 inhabitants (2012) live in the city on an area of ​​641.89 km², which corresponds to a population density of 54.40 inhabitants per km². The area of ​​La Palma was already populated by the indigenous people of Cuba. 79 remains of the settlement were found. On January 2, 1959, the Cuban revolutionaries took command of the city.

The landscape in the municipality has a varied relief, the heights vary from 0.5 meters above sea level to 500 meters above. The mountains are characterized by numerous caves.

Several rivers run through the area, including the Río Jaugua, Guacamaya, Juan Moreno and La Leña. The territory of the municipality also includes smaller offshore islands in the sea (Cayos) with an area of ​​7.53 km².

Economy and Infrastructure

The city has 12 municipal companies, three of them in agriculture and three in manufacturing. There are also 26 cooperatives (as of 2011). 53 percent of the roughly 16,600 employed work in the service sector, 40 percent in agriculture and just under 2 percent in industry. The main crops are vegetables, rice, maize, roots and tubers. Around 15,500 tonnes of the main crop, vegetables, were harvested in 2011 (2005: 6200). Milk and meat are also produced.

There is also a tourism sector in the city, which consists of 57 accommodations and accommodated almost 6000 tourists in 2011.

There are 21 primary schools, 3 secondary schools and 6 day-care centers in the municipality. The health service has 21 facilities. There are also numerous cultural institutions such as cinemas, culture houses and theater groups.
