The station Ferndinandshof located in the municipality Ferdinandshof in the Vorpommern-Greifswald . It lies on the Angermünde-Stralsund Railway and was the starting point of the Mecklenburg-Pomerania narrow-gauge railway to Friedland from 1892 to 1965 . In operational terms, the former train station is now only a stopping point .

location

The station is located on the 150.2 kilometer of the Angermünde-Stralsund railway and runs through the west of the town. Adjacent streets are Bahnhofstrasse as well as Neubrandenburger Strasse and Gundelachstrasse . The next station to the south is Jatznick station, around 8 km away, and Ducherow station around 14 km to the north .

history

Ferdinandshof station with arriving train.

With the opening of the Angermünde-Stralsund Railway in 1863, Ferdinandshof also got its station and had good rail connections to Anklam , Greifswald and Pasewalk . There was a connection to the other rail network via Berlin and Stettin .

In the reception building were dispatchers and station-houses. In addition, there was ticket issuing and baggage handling, which served 50,000 travelers annually and transported over 8 t of luggage. Customers put 650 pieces of luggage under for safekeeping. Ferdinandshof had full clearance powers in domestic and international rail traffic.

The station gained more and more importance through the freight traffic . Almost 35,000 tons of wagonload freight were handled. 27,500 t were loaded and 7,000 t arrived at the station. In addition, more than 4,500 head of cattle left Ferndinandshof. At the time when the German army still had cavalry troops, the army took horses from the horse breeding business in Ferndinandshof, which were then transported to their place of use by train. Until after the Second World War , stallion shows were held annually in Ferdinandshof. Then express trains stopped there on an unscheduled basis in order to offer visitors convenient transport links.

At the beginning of the 1950s, training areas and barracks for the people's police station were built in the Ueckermünder Heide . From 1953, the stations and facilities on the route to Ueckermünde were no longer sufficient, so Ferdinandshof and Jatznick also served to ease the burden.

On April 26, 1988, a serious train accident happened near the town: When only one track was open due to electrification work, the driver of the delayed D 502 to Stralsund drove through Ferdinandshof station despite a signal indicating a stop. His train hit an express train that was traveling in the opposite direction in accordance with the rules. The locomotive crew recognized the danger, was able to bring the train to a standstill before the impact, and left the locomotive in good time. After the emergency braking was initiated late, the locomotive 132 556 of the D 502 climbed onto the stationary 132 163 at around 55 km / h, so that the engine driver remained physically unharmed. The 132163 was so smashed that it had to be dismantled at the scene of the accident. There were two fatalities and 32 injured among the travelers, as well as loss of millions.

Four to five passenger and two freight trains in each direction served Ferdinandshof station every day . At peak times, there were 40 express trains and 65 to 75 freight trains that ran through the station. Today all handling facilities are out of order. Freight traffic has been suspended since 1994. The corresponding systems are now unusable or completely dismantled. The station became a stopping point . Since April 19, 2005, Ferdinandshof has been controlled by the operations center in Berlin via a control computer in Anklam and is no longer manned locally. Up to the 1990s, 15 railway workers were working on site. The previously well-frequented train station restaurants in the reception buildings of both the standard and narrow-gauge stations are closed. The apartments in the former railway houses are now in a very dilapidated condition.

The former station building is still completely preserved today. With the cessation of operations, the office and restaurant were converted into living space. Today it is no longer used.

Investments

The station once had a total of six tracks, three main and three side tracks. The main tracks had two 220 m long platforms for passenger traffic . The three side tracks were used for loading. The complete station facilities between the entry signals stretched from the route kilometers 149.645 to 151.986. The length of all tracks within the Ferdinandshof station was a total of 5 km.

14 points , eight main signals and the barrier systems were operated by two signal boxes. There were line telephones and train alarm systems for communication with the neighboring stations. Within the station there were station telephone connections between the two signal boxes and from the dispatcher to the level crossing . A small basa with ten connections connected all posts with the Reichsbahn-wide telephone network.

For goods traffic, there was a combined head and side ramp, about 180 m² in size, with a load capacity of 60 t on an approx. 150 m long and 20 m wide loading road . In addition, a weighbridge and loading gauge existed for freight traffic. At the request of the recipient, the goods were delivered and removed by a trucking company for a fee.

Former narrow-gauge station

On October 1, 1892, the Mecklenburg-Pomerania narrow-gauge railway , MPSB for short, went into operation with a gauge of 600 mm. Along with Anklam, Ferdinandshof became an important transition point between narrow-gauge and standard-gauge railways in passenger and freight traffic. In the western part of the narrow-gauge station were the facilities and tracks for freight traffic. The Ferdinandshof Remonteamt was also connected by the narrow-gauge railway to grassland areas in Western Pomerania and Mecklenburg-Strelitz , from which large quantities of green and dry forage were obtained. In addition, the railway line was used to transport agricultural products to the relevant businesses and to deliver goods to local companies.

In the Ferdinandshofer Kleinbahnhof there were nine tracks with a total length of about 1250 m. The railway facilities there included a locomotive shed , a coal railroad , a turntable with a diameter of 9 m, a reception building and a toilet facility . The platform was opposite the station building. The turntable was dismantled in 1945. To turn the locomotives around, a track triangle was created two years later .

Only one or two mixed pairs of trains drove on the narrow-gauge railway a day. Sometimes they only ran on certain days of the week. In autumn and spring, when transporting harvest and agricultural products away, the demand was particularly high. If necessary, there were even a few special trains. After the Second World War, almost all of the MPSB's tracks and railway systems were dismantled as reparations . However, this turned out to be a big mistake for the occupying power. In the meantime, partial reconstruction took place. The lack of the narrow-gauge railway could be compensated by the amelioration of the Friedland Great Meadow and the possible construction of efficient roads.

On November 30, 1960, operations were stopped and the line was subsequently dismantled.

The Association of Mecklenburg-Pomerania Narrow Gauge Railroad Friends e. V. from the community of Galenbeck-Schwichtenberg has been trying for a number of years to maintain the route as far as possible. Its members rebuilt approx. 2.5 km of the route with three stations and ran a small railway operation there seasonally.

traffic

Ferdinandshof is served by the RE 3 regional express , which runs between Falkenberg (Elster) station and Stralsund Hbf , every two hours. All Intercity trains pass through the stop without stopping.
