Heerbrugg railway station from Bahnhofstrasse looking north

The Heerbrugg train station is a through station in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen at the SBB railway line from Chur to Rorschach . It is located in the municipality of Au in the district of Heerbrugg .

history

The age of the railways began in Switzerland in 1844 with the opening of the first line (from Strasbourg ) to Basel. With the Rorschach – Chur railway line , the first section of a railway was to be built, from Lake Constance over the Lukmanier Pass to Lake Maggiore , with a connection to Italy , suggested in 1839 by the engineer Richard La Nicca . The second access line towards Zurich and Basel was to be created with the Ziegelbrücke – Sargans railway line .

The importance of the railroad was recognized early in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley . As early as 1852, the struggle for the location of the station for the communities of Berneck, Balgach, Diepoldsau and Widnau began on the Südostbahn , which was planning the Rhine Valley line. Balgach wanted a train station in Müllacker ; Berneck, Diepoldsau and the Rebsteiner and Marbacher, however, were in favor of the Heerbrugg location. Professor Karl Völker donated the land to the community of Au for the construction of the train station in Heerbrugg, which gave it the decisive advantage.

The station went into operation in 1858 when the Rheineck - Sargans section went into operation.

In 1885 the railway line from Rorschach station via Sargans to Chur was completed under the now United Swiss Railways. In 1888 the Rhaetian Railway was founded as Landquart – Davos AG (LD), which was finally able to connect to Italy with the Bernina line to Chiavenna . Since the construction of an Eastern Alpine Railway from Chur in the direction of Italy opposite the Gotthard Railway was subject, the Rhine Valley Railway from Rorschach to Chur remained a regional route.

From 1897 to 1940 the Heerbrugg station was the stop of the Altstätten – Berneck tram . From 1915 to 1956 it was a transfer point for the tram to the Heerbrugg – Diepoldsau line.

In 1981 the now overloaded level crossing on Widnauerstrasse (Berneck – Hohenems) was replaced by an underpass.
