Railway stations in Hessen |
The Heppenheim (Bergstr) Bahnhof the city of Heppenheim (Bergstraße) is located on the railway line Heidelberg-Frankfurt ( Main-Neckar Railway ). On weekdays the station is connected to the long-distance network of Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) with an InterCity connection .
history
The station was opened in the course of the section-wise opening of the Main-Neckar-Bahn on June 22, 1846: Langen - Darmstadt - Heppenheim. In the course of the Baden Revolution , the station was a target and occupied several times.
In 1903 the connecting line Heppenheim - Lorsch of the Nibelungen Railway was built. Due to the lack of a connection between the Odenwald and the Nibelungen Railway, the expected volume of traffic also fell short of expectations. A few decades later, the Heppenheim – Lorsch line was shut down and dismantled.
On October 9, 1922, the locomotive station at Heppenheim station was relocated to Bensheim station.

Station facilities
Reception building
The station building was built from 1845–1846 based on a design by Georg Mollers in the classicism style on the city side, east of the railway line. The facade of the two-storey sandstone building with a basement is characterized on the long side by five axes, which have a central group of three, designed as portals to the vestibule on the ground floor . There are three window axes on the transverse side. The eaves of the flat hipped roof is formed by a revolving scrolls fries decorated. On both sides of the main building there are approximately symmetrical, single-storey extensions. The platform roof in front of the station building is supported by lattice girders from the construction period on thin supports with narrow capitals made of cast iron. As an example of the early railway construction, the station building is a listed building .
Track systems
By the Hessentag in Heppenheim in summer 2004, the train station was modernized and made accessible to the disabled .
In the area of the station there were still numerous shunting or freight tracks that led to various companies, but are now overgrown and were finally dismantled in mid-2015. At this time, the entire overhead line was also replaced. Two platform tracks are available for passenger traffic .
Bus station
To the side of the reception building is a small bus station with four bus platforms, from which there are connections to the surrounding cities and communities.
