The Liebenau (Bz Kassel) Bahnhof was the breakpoint of the small town of Liebenau in the district of Kassel , near the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse . The stop, which has been closed since 2015, is located on route kilometers 301,255 on the Kassel – Warburg railway line ("Friedrichs-Wilhelms-Nordbahn") and has two platform tracks. The reception building the railway, the leading over the tracks railway bridge are cultural monuments due to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

With a total of only four trains stopping per day before the shutdown in 2015, the Liebenau stop was one of the least frequented passenger stations in Germany .

After the construction of the station, the previously closed oval of the cityscape was dissolved. The citizens of Liebenau found it difficult to get used to the new "railroad" means of transport. The continuation of the route to Warburg took place in July 1853 after the completion of the viaduct over the Diemel , which today forms the state border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse.

Between 1945 and 1949 Liebenau station was a border station between the British sector (North Rhine-Westphalia) and the US sector (Hesse).

After the Second World War , there were two signal boxes , a barrier post , a ticket office , a goods handling facility with its own shunting locomotive and a railway maintenance office . The freight was not until the 1970s is of great importance and the railway was the largest employer in Liebenau. Artificial fertilizers for the two grain houses and wood for the window factory came in via the rails .

The 1970s brought some changes to Liebenau station. The old level crossing with barrier was replaced by a new pedestrian bridge made of prestressed concrete, which is now a listed building. Just a few years later, the Liebenau train station was over. As a result of the conversion to a regional express train system , the stop of passenger trains was (initially) discontinued in May 1978. From then on, the trains passed through the station without stopping.

In 1996 the disused station was reactivated and integrated into the tariff area of ​​the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV).

After the temporary integration of the Kassel – Warburg line into the RegioTram Kassel system , Liebenau station had been the stop of the RegioTram RT 3 (Warburg – Hofgeismar – Vellmar-Obervellmar – Kassel) since May 8, 2005. This connection no longer exists as the RT3 line to Hofgeismar-Hümme has been shortened and no longer runs via Liebenau to Warburg.

On Hessentag 2015 , which took place in the neighboring Hofgeismar , the Liebenau station experienced a brief boom, as most of the Sauerland Express (RE 17) trains and the two-hour additional trains of the RB 89 line ( Ems-Börde-Bahn ) now have one in Liebenau Stopped.

Since December 13, 2015, no trains have stopped at Liebenau station as scheduled. This was the second time that the breakpoint was closed since 1978.

The station building of the Liebenau train station has hardly changed - at least from a structural point of view - since it was built in 1848. The red brick building is a listed building and has been privately owned for several years.

Track and platform systems

The Liebenau train station now has only two of the three tracks on a house platform and a central platform . Track 1 on the main platform served the two remaining trains in the direction of Warburg / Hagen, and track 2 on the island platform served the trains in the direction of Kassel. The former track 3 only served as siding . In the meantime, however, this track bed has been removed.

In Liebenau only four trains of the regional express line RE 17 (" Sauerland-Express ") stopped on the route Hagen Hbf - Schwerte (Ruhr) - Arnsberg - Bestwig - Brilon Wald - Warburg - Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe , two trains in the morning Direction Kassel, in the afternoon two trains to Warburg.

During the Hessentag 2015, the two-hourly additional trains of the RB 89 ( Ems-Börde-Bahn ) stopped in Liebenau, which ran on the Grebenstein –Hofgeismar – Warburg– Paderborn route.

Until the scheduled change of the 2013/2014 timetable on December 15, 2013, individual trains on the RegioTram line RT 3 ran between Kassel and Warburg via Liebenau in the outskirts of the day .
