The Maulbronn West Station is the more important of the two railway stations in the Baden-Württemberg town of Maulbronn in Enz . The station is on route km 52.6 of the Württemberg Westbahn Bietigheim-Bissingen - Bruchsal and is the starting point for the branch line to Maulbronn Stadt . Since the branch line opened , the Westbahnhof has been a wedge station . On the branch line since 1996 reversed that of Mühlacker coming Monastery City Express and the Western Railway since 2019 a local train line from Bruchsal to precinct.
Surname
The name of the station, now known as “Maulbronn West”, has been changed several times over the years. After the branch line to Maulbronn (city) was opened, the station, which was only called Maulbronn at the time of its opening , was renamed Maulbronn Hauptbahnhof . Soon afterwards it was named again in Maulbronn and later finally in Maulbronn West . Today the name Westbahnhof is also in use, which was already in use during the times of the Reichsbahn.

Opening of the station until the branch line was opened (1853–1914)
On October 1, 1853, the Royal Württemberg State Railways (KWSt.E.) opened the Stuttgart – Mühlacker – Bretten – Bruchsal railway after years of negotiations between the Kingdom of Württemberg and the Grand Duchy of Baden . Due to difficult topographical conditions in the Maulbronn area, a station called Maulbronn was built about 3.5 km from Maulbronn. The Westbahn received a tunnel south of Maulbronn West station, which was bypassed to the west when the Westbahn was electrified in the 1950s , then used as a wine cellar and finally converted into a shooting range in 1998 .
Since Maulbronn could only be reached by rail via a train station located three kilometers outside in the forest, the city of Maulbronn initiated various petitions to establish a rail link between the train station and the city , with the need for a siding for the local, well-known sandstone quarries , the Transport of agricultural goods, but also with the emerging tourism to the famous Maulbronn Monastery was founded. These petitions ultimately led to a bill on the Württemberg side in 1909 for a standard-gauge line that was only supposed to connect Maulbronn to the Westbahn. On August 25, 1909, the Württemberg Chamber of Deputies passed the law to build the line. The first preparatory work began in 1911. The actual construction began in 1912 and was opened to traffic on August 1, 1914 after around two years of construction. The Westbahnhof thus became a wedge station .
Further development of the station and decline of the branch line (1914–1996)
Until the autumn of 1944, the Western Railway remained largely unaffected by the fighting of the Second World War . Afterwards, bombing and low-flying attacks on the stations and trains increased more and more, with numerous dead and injured as well as property damage.
After the first trains on the branch line were replaced by buses in the 1960s , the last scheduled passenger train ran on June 3, 1973. Until 1997, there was irregular freight traffic to Maulbronn's city station. On July 31, 1999, Deutsche Bahn officially ceased operations in freight traffic.
Klosterstadt-Express and Stadtbahn Karlsruhe (since 1996)
In order to avoid the impending closure of the Maulbronn West – Maulbronn Stadt line, excursion trains were again set up on summer weekends in 1996 on the Bretten – Mühlacker and Maulbronn West – Maulbronn Stadt routes, which were supposed to enable tourists to travel to the monastery under the name " Klosterstadt-Express " , Established on the initiative of the German Transport Club (VCD) and Pro Bahn with financial support from the neighboring communities. In the summer of 1997 the special trips took place on the occasion of the 850th anniversary of the monastery. Due to its great success, the initiative was continued in the following year. In order to improve accessibility from the direction of Karlsruhe , the city railways on the Karlsruhe – Bretten and Karlsruhe – Bruchsal – Bretten lines were extended to Maulbronn West, so that there was a direct connection to the Klosterstadt Express.
Track 644 has been closed since 1999.
When the preliminary operation of the S9 light rail line between Bretten and Mühlacker began in 1999 , the VCD and Pro Bahn took the initiative and spoke out in favor of building a connecting curve Bretten-Maulbronn, which would allow continuous light rail traffic on the Westbahn with the inclusion of the Maulbronn city station and one there Should enable a change of direction . However, there was no reactivation of the local rail passenger transport .
In the summer of 1999, the Sunday train service was extended to include a shuttle service between the two Maulbronn train stations every half hour and supplemented by a train connection from Horb - Pforzheim - Maulbronn. This train connection travels "in the footsteps of Hermann Hesse ", which refers to the poet's life. From 2000 to 2007 there were four pairs of trains on the Tübingen – Horb – Pforzheim – Maulbronn route on the operating days. According to VCD, around 150 to 250 passengers use the offer every day of traffic.
Due to the new tendering of the transport services with a corresponding change of operator, the connections were switched to a regional train on June 9, 2019. These run every hour on the route from Bruchsal via Maulbronn West to Stuttgart.

Since 1996, Maulbronn West station has been the stop for the Klosterstadt-Express from Mühlacker to Maulbronn Stadt in the summer . In regular traffic, the Westbahnhof is only a stop for the hourly regional train RB17C from Stuttgart via Vaihingen (Enz), Mühlacker, Maulbronn West and Bretten to Bruchsal.
