In 1878, plans began for a railway line between Valls and Barcelona that would run along the Mediterranean coast . It was one of the numerous new railway lines that were built around the Catalan capital at the end of the 19th century. The opening between Barcelona-Morrot and Vilanova i la Geltrú took place at the end of 1881. After the entire route was continuously passable, the temporary Morrot station, which was located on the western outskirts at the foot of Montjuïcs, was abandoned . Since then, the eastern end of the line has been Barcelona's former main station, França station . In 1975 a single-track branch line went into operation between El Prat de Llobregat and Barcelona Airport .
service
Individual Talgo trains run to Seville and Alicante over the stretch of coast between Barcelona and Sant Vicenç de Calders – Barcelona, but they do not serve any stops on the way. Since the beginning of 2020, all other long-distance traffic has been handled entirely on the Madrid – Barcelona high-speed line . There are also some regional express connections ( called Media Distancia in Spain ) between Barcelona-França and Tortosa , Flix and Lleida- Pirineus, some of which also stop in Sitges or Vilanova i la Geltrú.
The section between La Plana - Picamoixons and Sant Vicenç de Calders is served by regional trains, between Sant Vicenç de Calders and Barcelona the line R2 Sud of Rodalies Barcelona , the suburban train of Barcelona runs. The R2 Nord line connects Barcelona Airport with the city center every 30 minutes.
Route description
La Plana - Picamoixons - Sant Vicenç de Calders
The beginning of the single-track railway line is the wedge station La Plana - Picamoixons in the municipality of the city of Valls and separates here from the Tarragona – Lleida railway line . The route leads through the Catalan pre-coast mountains of the Comarca Alt Camp . The plain of the pre-coastal area begins at Roda de Berà , and finally the Mediterranean Sea is reached at Sant Vicenç de Calders train station. The important junction station in the municipality of El Vendrell provides a connection to the Barcelona – Martorell – Tarragona railway line .
Sant Vicenç de Calders – Barcelona França
The double-track route from here runs mostly along the coastal strip of the Costa del Garraf . Between Vilanova i la Geltrú and Castelldefels, the route leads in a rocky landscape directly past the sea and is led through numerous tunnels. From Casteldefels the route turns inland. The branch line from Barcelona-El Prat airport joins in front of Bellvitge , and from the underground station El Prat de Llobregat there is a joint route with the high-speed line Madrid-Barcelona , which, however, is mostly underground. The above-ground section ends shortly before today's Sants main station . After Sants, the route leads through the Aragó tunnel to the Barcelona-França terminus.
Aeroport – El Prat de Llobregat
The Aeroport stop is located north of Terminal 2 at Barcelona-El Prat Airport . It is the end point of the Rodalies line R2 Nord from Maçanet - Massanes . The former double-track terminal station is located 200 meters north of Terminal 2 and is connected to it by a pedestrian bridge. In 2015, the former train station was dismantled onto one track and a second platform was added. The Spanish solution is also used here . Before El Prat de Llobregat, the branch line joins the existing line.
Planning
In July 2015, construction work began on a new double-track underground line between El Prat de Llobregat station and Terminal 1. The 3-kilometer tunnel is to have an underground stop at Terminal 2 and end at Terminal 1. The L9 Sud metro line has been connecting the two terminals since February 12, 2016 . When this new section goes into operation, the above-ground route is to be abandoned. The two outer tracks in El Prat have already been built as an advance payment for the connection to the airport.
