The Irmak – Karabük – Zonguldak railway has a length of 415 km and connects the Turkish Black Sea port of Zonguldak via Karabük with the Irmak junction near Ankara in Anatolia.

The single-track line was built in 1937. It runs from Zonguldak along the Black Sea to Filyos, then the route follows the Filyos Çayı River through the West Pontic Mountains to Karabük , where the route first follows the left tributary Soğanlı Çayı, then the Eskipazar Çayı and then along the D755 the watershed overcomes and further the Çerkeş Çayı reached the city of Çerkeş . Further along the river, the route reaches Kurşunlu and leads with the Oluk-Dağı tunnel into the valley of the Acı Çay , where it later follows the tributary Terme Çayı before changing the valley and following the Kızılırmak and then reaching Irmak .

From 2012 to 2016 the superstructure and engineering structures will be renovated and new signaling according to ETCS Level 1 will be installed, which is supported by the EU with 188 million euros .

passenger traffic

Regional trains run between Filyos and Zonguldak . The Karaelmas Ekspresi runs between Ankara and Zonguldak and takes 9.5 hours for the route. Both directions are alternately served 3 days a week.
