Atkaracalar is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Çankırı . The place is about 50 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Çankırı .
district
The district is located in the northwest of the province. It borders Çerkeş County in the west , Bayramören County in the north , Kurşunlu County in the east and Orta County in the south . The city and the district crosses from west to east the European route 80 , which leads from Edirne via Istanbul to Erzurum and the Iranian border. A railway line runs parallel to it from Bartın on the Black Sea to Kayseri . The Çerkeş Çayı river , which flows further west into the Gerede Çayı , takes a similar course in the Atkaracalar area . The latter follows part of the border with Bayramören to the north. In the north of the district is a foothill of the Ilgaz Dağları mountain range , in the south of the 1840 meter high Dumanlı Tepe .
Atkaracalar is the smallest county and was formed in 1987 by splitting off from Kurşunlu County. Atkaracalar was a Bucak in Kurşunlu County (1985 census: 9,754 inhabitants). The district of Atkaracalar consists of the district town (approx. 42 percent of the district population) and another municipality ( Belediye ), the Belde Çardaklı with 2,121 inhabitants. There are also eight villages ( Köy ) with an average of 261 residents. Hüyükköy with 703 inhabitants is the largest. The number of villages fell by two compared to the previous year, as two villages were "incorporated" into the two Belediye (as a city district - Mahalle).
The population density of the district is slightly above the provincial average.
