Çerkeş is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Çankırı . The place is located about 65 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Çankırı and is home to around half of the district's population (2018: 44.2%). The meaning of the name Çerkeş is unclear, but there is definitely no connection with Çerkes ( Turkish for "Circassian" ). In ancient times the name of the place Antinoupolis was after Antinous , a favorite and probably lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian .

The district is located in the west of the province. It borders in the northeast to a small extent on the Bayramören district , in the east on the Atkaracalar district , in the southeast on the Keis Orta . Cross-provincial it borders in the north on Ovacık County and in the northwest on Eskipazar County (both Karabük Province ), in the west on Gerede County ( Bolu Province ) and finally in the south on Kızılcahamam County ( Ankara Province ).

The European route 80 , which leads from Edirne via Istanbul to Erzurum and the Iranian border, crosses the district from west to east. At the same time, a railway line from Bartın on the Black Sea to Kayseri and the Çerkeş Çayı river , which flows further west into the Gerede Çayı , run. The latter flows through the district in the north. A tributary of the Çerkeş Çayı is dammed about twelve kilometers southwest of the district town near Ağaca to the Akhasan Barajı . A country road connects the place over the 1711 meter high pass Işıkdağ Gecidi with Kızılcahamam in the south. Further to the east, another connecting road branches off from the E 80 over the 1473 meter high Sacakbeli Gecidi to Orta. In the north of the district lie the western foothills of the Ilgaz Dağları Mountains , in the south of the Işık Dağ . The highest peaks are the Karataş Tepesi with 1998 meters southwest of Çerkeş and the Uzundere Tepesi with 1724 meters in the northeast.

The district is the largest in the province and, in addition to the district town, consists of another municipality ( Belediye ): Saçak with 3,328 inhabitants. 49 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 145 inhabitants complete the district. With 576 inhabitants, Örenköy is the largest village. The population density does not even reach half the provincial average.
