Swell:

The Verden – Rotenburg railway is a single-track main line in Lower Saxony that connects the Verden (Aller) station on the Wunstorf – Bremen line with the Rotenburg (Wümme) station on the Wanne-Eickel – Hamburg line.

From a large-scale perspective, together with the Nienburg – Minden line , it represents the shortest direct connection between Hamburg and Ostwestfalen-Lippe with the Bielefeld regional center. It also serves as an important diversion line for the Intercity Express and Intercity trains on the Hanover – Hamburg line . Even if the railway line between Verden and Bremen is closed, regional express trains will be diverted via this route.

history

On June 10, 1914, the Prussian State Railroad was granted the license to build the line. Due to the First World War, however, it was only opened by the Deutsche Reichsbahn on July 1, 1928 .

Weekend rail passenger transport was only reintroduced in 2001. Since then, the RB 76 Rotenburg - Minden has been very popular with travelers with the weekend ticket , as this connection in local transport results in the shortest travel times between the Ruhr area and Hamburg.

Triggered by the cut in regionalization funds, discussions were held about closing the line for passenger traffic from December 2007. The suspension of local transport could be averted. Due to the very low demand in through traffic, however, the continuous line between Minden and Rotenburg was abandoned Monday to Friday. Since then, the local transport line has ended in Verden from Monday to Friday. Since the route between Minden and Nienburg was taken over by the Eurobahn in December 2017 , operation on weekdays and on weekends is largely identical, although some HVZ amplifiers are used from Monday to Friday. The additional local transport connection between Verden and Nienburg, which had existed at the weekend until then, was discontinued without replacement. While you have to change trains at the weekend in Verden and Nienburg, there is no change in Minden when traveling to / from Bielefeld.

Public transport

The route is part of the Bremen / Lower Saxony transport association , whose tariff applies. The journey time is 18 to 20 minutes.

2007-2017

The route was served every two hours by regional trains of the DB Regio Nord . The trains ran on the route Rotenburg (Wümme)  - Verden (Aller)  - Nienburg  - Minden . This line was referred to in North Rhine-Westphalia as the RB 76 Weser-Aller-Bahn . While the trains were well filled at the weekend (due to long-distance travelers with the DB weekend ticket and the Lower Saxony ticket ), there was less utilization during the week. In 2008, demand was around 380 passengers per day during the week and around 950 passengers per day on Sundays. The very low number of passengers passing through during the week meant that the line then only shuttled between Verden and Rotenburg.

Class 111 or 143 locomotives with double-decker cars or n-cars were used on the RB 76 . Although electrified for a long time, electric trains have only gradually been used during the week since 2013. These usually consisted of a locomotive, a double-decker car and a double-decker control car, each of the older generation. In the transition period in spring / summer 2013, trains that only consisted of a locomotive and double-decker control car were used. Since the 2014/15 timetable change, the Elbe-Weser railways and transport services (evb) have received the order to operate this route with class 628 multiple units . At the weekend, the connection was operated by the evb in double traction, alternating with those DB Regio trains that were serving the RE 78 line at the time of the week.

Since 2018

The railways and transport companies Elbe-Weser (evb) serve the line. The only vehicles used are two DB class 628 diesel multiple units with 144 seats, although the line has long been electrified. With two locomotives that are parked at the Verden-Walsroder railway and guarded there by the security service of VEW and AllerBus, evb has been successfully driving independently on the RB 76 for several years, once on behalf of DB Regio AG HVZ the line is served Monday to Friday every hour, otherwise every two hours. From Friday to Sunday there is also a late evening train.

In Rotenburg there is a connection to the RE 4 from / to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. In the early hours of the morning it operates as the RB 41, which leads to a timetable that differs slightly from the regular timetable, as the timetable is based on this connection.

In Verden there is a connection to the RE 8 (as well as to the HVZ RE 1) from / to Hannover Hbf and the RS 1 from / to Bremen. There is a connection from / to Bielefeld via Minden via the RE 8 in Nienburg.

From December 2022, the route is to become part of the Bremen-Lower Saxony regional S-Bahn.

Freight transport

The most important task of the line is the rail freight traffic from Maschen marshalling yard via Seelze marshalling yard to southern Germany and via Minden to the Ruhr area.

future

The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plans 2003 and 2030 and the Federal Railways Expansion Act 2004 envisage an expansion to a double-track main line. In Verden, a flyover is planned to decouple the traffic from Rotenburg and Verden and to connect the regional S-Bahn from Bremen in the middle.

The double-track expansion of the Rotenburg – Verden (Aller) and Nienburg (Weser) –Minden lines is part of the target network that was defined in connection with the expansion of the Hamburg / Bremen – Hanover connections. In the course of the decision for the so-called Alpha-E variant, this expansion was preferred to a new construction of the so-called Y-route. The route is an urgent requirement in the law on the expansion of railways and the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030.
