The Seinäjoki – Oulu ( Finnish Pohjanmaan rata ) railway is a railway line in Finland . It has the Finnish track width of 1524 mm and a length of 334.8 km. The Finnish state owns the route. The route is operated by the state-owned railway company VR-Yhtymä .

history

The line was built from 1883 to 1886 and opened on November 1, 1886. In 1981 the electrification between Seinäjoki and Kokkola went into operation. Two years later, in 1983, the rest of the section to Oulu followed .

Operation today

There are six trains a day in each direction on the entire route from Seinajöki to Oulu. There are also four more trains in each direction between Seinäjoki and Ylivieska . In Ylivieska there is a connection with a bus to Oulu. Some of these buses will be replaced by trains on a few days (mainly on weekends), which is why ten trains run in each direction on some days.

Passengers can travel at speeds of up to 200 km / h between Lapua and Kokkola. On the remaining sections, the speed is limited to 140 km / h. Freight trains are allowed to travel at a maximum of 120 km / h.
