Balthasar von Groschlag zu Dieburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Balthasar von Groschlag zu Dieburg (* before 1479; † January 5, 1535 in Mainz ) was the cathedral chapter of the Mainz cathedral chapter .

Life

family

He was born the son of Heinrich von Groschlag zu Dieburg († before 1495) and Brigida von Ützlingen . As a typical aristocratic cleric with the customs of his time, he lived during his time in Mainz in open cohabitation with a Christine Engelländerin , with whom he fathered three children, Rochus , Johannes Balthasar and Kungundis , whom he only had legitimized shortly before or after his death in 1535.

On August 16, 1524, Phillipp von Rieneck documents that he will hand over the Rieneck fiefs of his late brother Ludwig von Groschlag to Balthasar for life with the consent of his cousin Heinrich. These included Schöllkrippen , Hochkele , Kalde and Offkalde .

In the context of inheritance disputes with his cousin Heinrich over family and fiefdoms in the communities of Altheim , Hergershausen and Sickenhofen , he became entangled in a feud with Count Philip III from 1528/29 . from Hanau-Lichtenberg . There were similar disputes with his brother Ludwig over the inheritance of his parents as early as 1506 . An amicable settlement was only reached with the mediation of his then employer and Archbishop of Mainz Jakob von Liebenstein in the form of an inheritance contract drawn up by him. Most of the goods and fiefdoms were left to Ludwig, while Balthasar received an annual annuity of 20 guilders and a tithe at Dornheim . The arguments highlight the character of Balthasar.

Career

In 1479, Balthasar von Groschlag was nominated by the canon and relative Otto von Bach († 1497) for the Mainz cathedral chapter , to which his uncle Oswald had previously belonged. He was accepted as domicellar in 1490. On this occasion, relatives and friends of the family confirmed his knighthood . On May 29, 1505 he was installed as cathedral chapter . As a typical noble cleric of the early modern period, he received neither the deacon nor the priestly ordination , but only achieved the subdiaconate. In 1533 he became subcustos of the chapter. In the course of the administrative reforms, Elector Albrecht von Brandenburg appointed Balthasar Groschlag to the council in 1524 against the opposition of the cathedral chapter, which was opposed to the new administration. Associated with this was a donation from the Elector for “ trewen useful service ” - a house, barn and area in Dieburg . His death shield and inscription , which is no longer available today, was handed down and, according to tradition, hung in the memorie of the cathedral: " Balthasar (von) Graslach a Diepurg, huius Metropolitanae aedis Maguntinae Canoniucs, mortem foeliciter obiit anno salutis MDXXXV Januarii nonis ". According to information from the Episcopal Cathedral and Diocesan Museum in Mainz , the death shield, like many others, was burned by the Napoleonic soldiers during the occupation of Mainz in the winter of 1813 .
