The Bambamarca district is located in the Bolívar Province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district has an area of ​​164 km². The 2017 census counted 3175 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2951, in 2007 it was 3537. The district administration is located in the 3525  m high village of Bambamarca with 693 inhabitants (as of 2017). Bambamarca is 32 km north of the provincial capital Bolívar .

Geographical location

The Bambamarca district is located on the east bank of the north-flowing Río Marañón in the south of the Bolívar province. Its right tributary Río Chocta limits the district to the north. The Peruvian Central Cordillera runs along the eastern district border with the watershed to the catchment area of the Río Huallaga further east .

The Bambamarca district borders in the southwest with the Sartimbamba district ( Sánchez Carrión province ), in the northwest with the Sitacocha district ( San Marcos province ), in the north with the Bolívar district , in the east with the Huicungo district ( Mariscal Cáceres province ) and in the south the Condormarca district .
