In 1960 Roles, the daughter of the racing horse trainer Carlton A. Roles (1903-1970), national runner-up behind Carol Heiss and won the bronze medal behind Heiss and the Dutchwoman Sjoukje both at the World Championships in Vancouver and at the Olympic Games in Squaw Valley Dijkstra . She then resigned, married, took her husband's name, Pursley, and had a child, Shelley. After the US team's plane crash on their way to the 1961 World Cup in Prague , Roles was asked to return to competitive sports and, above all, to help figure skaters, who now had to compete in international tournaments earlier than usual, with their experience. Roles won their first national championship title when they returned in 1962. She finished the world championship in fifth place. Then she had her second child, Ronald Dean, whom she named after her mentor Deane McMinn , who was killed in the plane crash . She did not take part in any competition in 1963, but tried again to qualify for the 1964 Olympic Games , but did not succeed, she was fifth at the national championships. Then she finally said goodbye to amateur sports. She later became a trainer. Her students included Brian Pockar , Rosalynn Sumners, and Nicole Bobek .
