Barbara Schäfer (politician)

Barbara Schäfer-Wiegand (born October 18, 1934 in Borken ) is a former German educator and politician for the CDU . From 1984 to 1992 she was Minister for Labor, Health, Social Affairs and Family in Baden-Württemberg .

Life and accomplishments

Barbara Schäfer grew up in Westphalia and graduated from high school in Brede in Brakel in 1954 . She then studied philology at the Universities of Göttingen , Freiburg and Poitiers / France. In 1959 she passed her first state examination, and in 1961 the assessor examination . Then she was a teacher of Latin, French and history in Pforzheim and Karlsruhe .

Schäfer's first marriage was to Alfons Schäfer from Balsbach / Odenwald . After his death, she married Bernhard Wiegand in 1992.

Schäfer is a member of the Soroptimist Club Karlsruhe.

Political activity

She began her political career in 1975 when she joined the CDU. Four years later she moved into the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg , to which she belonged until 1995, when she resigned from her seat. Ingrid Blank became her successor .

After the state elections in 1984, Prime Minister Lothar Späth brought Schäfer into his cabinet and made her Minister of Labor, Health, Social Affairs and Family. After that she was a member of the federal executive committee of the CDU until 1992. Even after Späth resigned, it was part of the first cabinet of his successor Erwin Teufel . However, just a year later there were differences of opinion between the two politicians over abortion . After the state elections in 1992, a grand coalition was formed in Baden-Württemberg and Schäfer had to give up her ministerial office in favor of the SPD politician Helga Solinger .

Schäfer has been involved in the Baden-Württemberg Women's Union since the 1980s , of which she chaired the state from 1985 to 1995. Since then she has been its honorary chairman.
