Bartolomeu Anania

Bartolomeu Anania (* as Valeriu Anania on March 18, 1921 in Glăvile , Vâlcea County ; † January 31, 2011 in Cluj ) was a Romanian writer and Romanian Orthodox clergyman . He was Archbishop and Metropolitan from 1993 until his death .

Life

Anania attended the Central Theological Seminary in Bucharest from 1933 to 1941. On February 2, 1942, he was ordained a monk in the Antim Monastery in Bucharest and was given the religious name Bartolomeu. On March 15, 1942, he was ordained a deacon monk. He then worked in the monasteries Polovragi and Baia de Arieș .

In 1944 Anania began studying medicine at the Cluj Medical Faculty and enrolled at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy . Because of the organization of protests against the government of Petru Groza on March 6, 1946, he was even before completing his studies relegated .

He then continued his theology studies at the University of Bucharest , at the Andreiană Academy of Cluj and at the Sibiu Orthodox Seminary . In 1948 he received his doctorate as a licentiate in theology.

The year before, in 1947, Anania had become abbot of the Toplita monastery in the district of Harghita . Subsequently, Anania held various offices. In 1958 he was arrested for his contacts with the Legionnaires' movement “Conspiracy against the Social Order” and sentenced to 25 years in prison. In 1964 he was released and was able to travel to the USA. There he took on various tasks in the American Romanian Orthodox Church. In 1967 he was ordained a priest and appointed archimandrite . From 1976 to 1982 he was director of the Institute for Biblical Studies and Mission of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Bucharest. From 1982 he worked as a writer in the Văratec Monastery , in particular his translation of the Bible was recognized.

Bartolomeu Anania was elected Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Vad, Feleac and Cluj by the Holy Synod on January 21, 1993, succeeding Teofil Herineanu . He was ordained bishop in Cluj Cathedral on January 7, 1993 by the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, Teoctist I. After the death of Antonie Plămădeală in 2005, he became Metropolitan of Transylvania .

In 2006 he was appointed Metropolitan of Cluj ( Klausenburg ), Alba ( Karlsburg ), Crişana ( Kreischgau ) and Maramureş; includes the areas of the districts of Alba , Bihor , Bistrița-Năsăud , Cluj , Maramureș , Mureș , Satu Mare and Sălaj . In 2007 he was the main competitor in the election of Daniel Ciobotea as Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

His numerous works include a wide variety of literary works. He introduced "in a very personal way into the mysterious world of icons and frescoes". He was a member of the Romanian Writers' Union, whose annual award he received in 1982.

Bartolomeu Anania's funeral took place on February 3, 2011 in the Orthodox Cathedral of Cluj, under the direction of Patriarch Daniel Ciobotea.

Act

Bartolomeu Anania was considered a controversial figure in the Romanian Orthodox Church. In the 1940 / 50s he was imprisoned because of his contacts with the fascist legionary movement ( Mişcarea Legionară ) of the Iron Guard and sentenced to 25 years of forced labor, of which he served six years. In 2008 he was unmasked by the Securitate intelligence agency CNSAS ( Consiliul Național pentru Studierea Arhivelor Securității ) as an informant under the code name Apostol of the Romanian secret service Securitate . In the church he was considered a reformer since 1990.
