Battlefleet Gothic: Armada

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada is a real-time strategy game from the French development studio Tindalos Interactive in the futuristic role-playing game world Warhammer 40,000 . It was released on April 21, 2016 for Windows via the French publisher Focus Home Interactive . It is based on the tabletop game Raumflotte Gothic .

action

Battlefleet Gothic takes place during the 12th Black Crusade, the attack of the Chaos Forces under their warlord Abaddon the Annihilator on the eponymous Gothic star sector. Opposite them stands the imperial fleet of mankind under the command of Admiral Spire, which is hardly equal to the overwhelming superiority. Other well-known Warhammer factions are the Eldar and Orcs.

Gameplay

In its single-player campaign, the game wants to simulate an almost hopeless and desperate war situation of humanity. The sector, which consists of 50 systems, is under constant pressure from enemy attacks, which means that territorial losses cannot be prevented. The only option left is to keep the losses as low as possible until a victory over the opposing main forces. Between the missions, the player sees the different focal points and has to decide where to intervene. Lost planets bring him disadvantages and make the opponent stronger. If he does not recapture planets in time, there is even a risk that they will be permanently destroyed.

The missions take place in real time, but the game speed can be reduced briefly in the campaign to issue commands and for more complex maneuvers. Despite the space scenario and three-dimensional environment, all units only move on a two-dimensional level, so they always operate at the same height level. The combat ships also have a high degree of inertia, similar to a sailing ship, which requires predictive control in order to bring them into the most favorable firing or driving position before they encounter the enemy. The player can choose between different attack tactics, such as targeting specific areas or ship systems of the enemy. The different races of the game differ in their skills and ship types, which requires different approaches.

The mission design offers different types of tasks, such as escorts, defense missions or the destruction of special objects. Not all missions need to be completed successfully. As a consequence of such unsuccessful missions, however, there are often disadvantages for the player, which he has to deal with in the subsequent missions and possibly increase the difficulty. Conversely, with each mission the player can further expand his fleet and unlock stronger combat ships, upgrade systems, improve crew members or unlock new and improved skills by assigning them to certain factions.

“Battlefleet Gothic: Armada turns out to be the best Warhammer game since Dawn of War 2: Retribution. Even if the space strategy battles definitely have their problems. "

- Maurice Weber : Test report Gamestar

"The space battles and the Warhammer flair are great, but the trappings seem too erratic, too hasty and too generic."

- Marcel Kleffmann : Test report 4Players

“'Battlefleet Gothic - Armada' looks great, has a lot of depth and controls itself perfectly. So the basic package is right. However, the finishing touches are missing at some corners. [...] That doesn't upset the varied and dynamic campaign, but a bit of frustration tolerance is required to win the war in the Gothic sector. "

- R. Kopp : Test report Computer Bild Spiele

In January 2018, Tindalos announced the development of the direct successor Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 , which was released on January 24, 2019.
