Beach Rats is an American drama directed by Eliza Hittman , which celebrated its world premiere on January 23, 2017 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . The cinema release in Germany took place on January 25, 2018.

Frankie, an aimless teenager who lives on the outskirts of Brooklyn , is having a miserable summer. First his father died, and then his mother urged him to finally find a girlfriend. Frankie tries to escape the desolation of his family life by flirting with older men online. When chat and webcamming is no longer enough for him, he seeks contact with men while cruising on the beach and at the same time begins a relationship with a young woman. Under the influence of three friends with whom he regularly consumes drugs, it becomes increasingly difficult for him to keep his double life a secret.

The director was Eliza Hittman, whose feature film debut it is. Hittman also wrote the script for the film. Hittman grew up in Brooklyn himself and spent many summers on Coney Island Beach . Already at the end of the 19th century, the southernmost tip of Brooklyn established itself as a place for prostitution, gambling and all sorts of shady things and is still characterized by violence and precarious social conditions. The fact that Hittman chose this location as the location for her film, according to Jana Weiss from Zeit Online , makes up a lot of his magic. The Coney Islands promenade with its fireworks is just as cheap a facade as the one that Frankie tries to maintain in front of his surroundings. Weiss continues: “In a sense, he lives in a double parallel world: very personal, between his latent homophobic buddies and his own homosexual desire.” Nicholas Leone composed the film music .
The leading role of Frankie was cast with the young actor Harris Dickinson . Kate Hodge played Donna, Erik Potempa plays Michael, and Madeline Weinstein stars as Simone.
The film celebrated its world premiere on January 23, 2017 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . This was also visited by Malia Obama , which generated a lot of media interest. As part of the Seattle International Film Festival 2017 , Beach Rats was nominated in the official competition for Best Feature Film for the Grand Jury Prize and was shown there in May 2017 in the New American Cinema section. In August 2017 the film was presented at the Locarno International Film Festival . In October 2017 the film was shown at the London Film Festival and the Hamburg Film Festival . The film was released in US cinemas on August 25, 2017 and in German cinemas on January 25, 2018.

In the US, the MPAA gave the film an R rating for its drug use, some nude scenes and sexual content, which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The statement of reasons for approval states: “The mixture of coming-of-age and coming-out story is largely calmly told and focuses on the sensitively drawn main character. Children and young people can be irritated by the sometimes gloomy and claustrophobic atmosphere, vulgar language and the incidentally shown, frequent drug use . However, since the latter is depicted critically and the staging of erotic scenes and other potentially overwhelming moments is consistently reserved, 16-year-olds can distance themselves sufficiently. "
Reviews
The film has so far won over 85 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.1 out of a possible 10 points.
David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as dark, dreamy, and utterly captivating. It was stated that Beach Council to a movie, the filmmaker Eliza Hittman missed their unique and distinctive painting and modern poetry with a textural sensuality combine to dangerous recklessness cause, which often goes hand in hand in the film with sexual experiences.
Jana Weiss from Zeit Online describes Beach Rats as a poetic coming-of-age story about a gay young man on Coney Island and as a film that looks like a Lana del Rey video. Frank Hermann from the queer Berlin city magazine Siegessäule highlights the award-winning camera work by Hélène Louvart in his review . The online portal kinofenster.de recommends the film for the subjects English, art , psychology, ethics and religion and offers materials for the film for teaching purposes. Jan-Philipp Kohlmann wrote there that research into the meaning of the film title could be used in English lessons as an introduction to character analysis. The focus should then be on Frankie's unspoken emotional life, his search for identity and the reasons why he avoids coming out to people who understand himself, Kohlmann continues. In this context, the students could also discuss a sentence from Frankie's friend Simone.
