The film is a film adaptation of the novel Confessions of the impostor Felix Krull by Thomas Mann . Detlev Buck directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Daniel Kehlmann . Producer Markus Zimmer explained the need to finally re-film the classic of world literature: “Thomas Mann's Felix Krull is one of his most popular and timelessly topical characters, whose charm and humor continue to delight readers and theater viewers. A remake for the cinema was long overdue. ”He hoped to reach a younger audience as well, because Felix represented something that he wasn't. This is currently a big issue.

The film received production funding of 1.3 million euros from the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern , 800,000 euros from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and further funding from the German Film Funding Fund .

The cast of the film includes Jannis Niewöhner in the title role and a. David Kross , Liv Lisa Fries , Maria Furtwängler , Joachim Król , Katja Flint and Christian Friedel . Marc Achenbach acted as cameraman .

The filming began at the beginning of March 2020. After a Sars-CoV-2 infection was detected in the team and the locks intended as filming locations were blocked due to the pandemic, filming was stopped after a week on March 16, 2020. From June 2020, filming continued under strict hygiene rules and was completed at the beginning of August 2020, after a further positive Sars-CoV-2 test with a production driver.

Locations have included Bayern (Munich, Schleissheim Palace , Regensburg), North Rhine-Westphalia ( Schloss Cappenberg , Benrath ) and Portugal.

The cinema release is scheduled for February 4, 2021.
