action

Atris works as a drug dealer for the Berlin gang boss El Keitar. By chance he meets his childhood friend Frank at night, whose glamorous appearance makes a strong impression on Atris, who, however, does not know that this is just a facade of Frank's impostor. Frank offers Atris an opportunity to finally break free from his (small) criminal environment by helping him with a large-scale counterfeit money deal that he wants to pull off with the Triads. At the same time, Atris gets to know the shoplifter Marie, who moves confidently and without fear in Atri's macho “gorilla” world and does not follow their patriarchal power structure. Atris decides to stand by her and break away from El Keitar. He agrees to take part in Frank's counterfeit money deal as a messenger in order to be able to travel to Tokyo with Marie with his promised share. However, when Frank does not get the necessary equity for the counterfeit money deal from his girlfriend Oxana as he had hoped, he hatches a plan together with the half-silly criminal Ronny, how they can get the counterfeit money of the Triads without having to pay for it. Frank's idea of exchanging the counterfeit money wallet with a staged diversion and delivering it to his former friend Atris in Oxana's apartment, the agreed place where the money was handed over, seems to be working at first. Because Ronny is not waiting for Frank, but is bringing the flowers back to Oxana's apartment, the situation slips away from him. At the same time, Atris has to fight against being betrayed by his friend and gets deeper and deeper into a chaotic spiral of dangers and absurdities, from which only Marie can help him in the end, who takes half of the counterfeit money and uses it to show him that he shouldn't believe that he is the hero of the story. At the end of the film you can see the two of them together in Tokyo, where they exchange the counterfeit money for real banknotes.

reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved for ages 12 and up . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film works with numerous oversubscriptions and portrays its protagonists in a very ambivalent manner. Individual depictions of violence , in which irony and brutality are sometimes mixed, as well as the often vulgar and sexist use of language can irritate and overwhelm children under the age of 12. But 12-year-olds are already able to assign these aspects to the milieu and the characters, who are never characterized as 'heroes' worth emulating. The scenes of violence are sometimes so artificially staged that even 12-year-olds can distance themselves sufficiently and critically evaluate what is depicted. "

Reviews

Michael Müller von Blickpunkt: Film particularly highlights Uisenma Borchu in his review , who plays the killer who is put on Frank by the triads to monitor the handover of the money: “In two or three tough scenes full of adrenaline, with cool oneliners and on a sleek motorcycle to booming music, it is seriously recommended for Quentin Tarantino's eventual martial arts sequel Kill Bill: Vol. 3. "

Antje Wessels is enthusiastic about her criticism of film releases: “( Detlev Buck ) turns asphalt gorillas into a gaudy neo-noir thriller comedy and continues to tighten the screw of absurdity until the furious finale. That in turn does not prevent him from answering the central question of guilt as complex (or better: not answering!) As Schirach himself. ”The film critic goes on to say that the film is not stingy with borrowings from well-known genre representatives little Only God can judge me and John Wick , but there is always a touch of Wolf of Wall Street , not least thanks to the engaging performance of Jannis Niewöhner as Jordan-Belfort blend . Asphalt gorillas have not become a staged patchwork quilt , according to Wessels: “On the one hand, the film clearly bears the extravagant, visionary signature of Detlev Buck, on the other hand, the balancing act between the references works very well. The performances of a Keanu Reeves or a Charlize Atomic Blonde Theron are not simply copied in stylishly choreographed action scenes . They only serve as a role model, which Buck confidently approaches with a 'I can do that too!' Attitude. "

From the German Film and Media Review was asphalt gorilla with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states: “The actors here are superbly cast down to the smallest roles. Buck's handling of sometimes extreme violence, which is highly aestheticized, but never remains without consequences, is more unusual. [...] The jury praised the film as an astonishing formal aesthetic achievement that enlivens the German genre film on a high level. "
