The Belgica is a Oceanography - research vessel , which from the Belgian navy is operated. Home port is Ostend .
Construction and technical data
The ship was on the Boelwerf in on behalf of the Belgian Ministry of Science on October 17, 1983 Temse on the Scheldt to put Kiel and ran there on January 6, 1984 of the stack . Godmother was the Belgian Queen Fabiola . It entered service on July 5, 1984. It is measured with 774 GT and 232 NRT (previously 765 BRT and 232 NRT) and displaces 1132 t . The ship's carrying capacity is 359 tons. The ship is 50.90 m long (44.95 m in the waterline ) and 10.00 m wide. The draft is max. 4.55 m.
The drive consists of a six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from the Anglo Belgian Company (type: 6 MDZC-1000-150 A) with an output of 1,199 kW , which acts on a variable-pitch propeller with a Kort nozzle via a gearbox . The top speed is twelve knots . The ship, which can travel 5,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots , can stay at sea continuously for up to 20 days.
For the power supply are two Caterpillar - diesel generators with a capacity of 275 kW. The ship has hydraulically driven transverse thruster systems fore and aft with 150 kW each.
Equipment and tasks
The nautical crew, 15 men, is provided by the Belgian Navy, which is also responsible for the operational use and logistical supply of the ship. The ship has the IMO number 8222563 and the identification A962.
The scientific work of Belgica is led by the “Management Unit of the Mathematical Model of the North Sea and the Scheldt Estuary” (MUMM). The ship is equipped with five different laboratories (fisheries laboratory , moisture laboratory, chemistry laboratory, biochemistry laboratory and microbiology laboratory); two further, specially equipped laboratories can be carried in special containers . Up to 16 scientists can be accommodated on board. At the stern of the ship there is a stern boom with a ton of lifting power.
The main task of the ship is the study of fauna and flora in the North Sea . The ship cooperates with Belgian universities and scientific institutes. One of the most frequent users of the Belgica is the fisheries department of the Ministry of the Flemish Community , for which the ship carries out stock estimates of commercially exploited fish species, monitors human disturbances in the marine environment and tests technical innovations in the use of trawls . If an oil spill occurs, the ship has the task of investigating the oil in order to identify the originator.
